So if you were CLK . . .

Actually, if I was Kiffin, I'd start the game with a play action pass, rolling Crompton out of the pocket for an easy dump down to Bryce Brown, and if that is covered, he can scramble for a few yards and take a little hit, and hopefully that will get him in the flow of the game.

Definitely need to keep the pocket moving with our O-line against the UF defense.

What would you do in the opening offensive series? We know they're going to put 8 or 9 (or 10 or 11) in the box and stuff any chance we have of running it. And to let Crompton throw it . . . well . . . . So I'm thinking we might see some kind of trick play in that first series. Maybe sneak Oku past the defense, pitch the ball to Teague on a fake end around and let him heave it downfield for a huge, unexpected gain. Burn their a$$es right off the bat and try to keep 'em honest. It's the only thing I can think of that might actually work.

If a wr was gonna throw it be jones i think he will be good to go for the game how about a flea flicker

deep posts.....throw the ball across the middle and often. this will keep crompton in the pocket and allow him to find more than one receiver as opposed to the roll out and throw it into the flats.

Stop and go to Zach Rogers.....they would never see it coming. Think about it, 90% of the time he has been in so far, he has been run blocking.

man is this game going to hurt...

This game can't hurt any worse than the past two years we've played the Gators...I mean not only did the Gators outplay us but we were helping them by playing unprepared, soft football. At least this year we will be fighting back. We might still get beat but damnit at least it will be a different looking team. A team with potential.

I'm not big on moral victories because a loss is still a loss, but if the Vols play physical and with no stupid penalties and we get beat then at least we know it's a talent level thing. The last two years it was a coaching thing...without a doubt IMO.

What's the difference? If there are 8-9 in the box, then it will be 3 runs and a punt to Brandon James.

I agree lawgator1 but there must be some mystery in our approach also. Having every play be just what it seems or what's expected will be too easy for a top-notch defense. We have to have that bit of uncertainty on every play coupled with a tenaciousness to hold on to the ball and not commit turnovers either early or late.

Long tedious series may not be crowd pleasers but they do tend to wear down the defense and keep our defense fresh. We must not have a succession of three and outs - that will be a killer.

To give a more serious response to your post, I'm not sure being practical is going to get the Vols anywhere in this game. If the gators have the box stacked, how are we going to pick up first downs running it? As another poster said, it's 3 and out and a punt to Brandon James. We have to take some risks to win. And note that I specifically indicated that I don't think I would let Crompton throw the long ball. I suggested giving it to Teague, who was a pretty successful high school QB, and letting him make the throw. Sure, it might not work, but even if it comes close, it might just make the defense a little more honest. And if it's picked off, that's pretty much the same as a punt, so nothing really lost as compared to going 3 and out.

Let me put it this way:

Three runs for 5 yards total and a punt is bad. But a pick on the first or second play of the game and its Katy bar the door for the Gators.

Put the 4 fastest WR's on the field and have them run fly patterns all day long while we pound the ball with the running game. Even if we go three and out a lot, we churn the clock and keep our D rested some. And having the WR's run makes the DB's run. Somebody's gonna be gassed and if we have pounded the ball enough we can break a couple here and there. Their DB's will be deep so we can get good yardage. We must control the clock as much as possible. Take your shots when you can, but putting #8 in the pocket will get us beat badly. He doesn't handle pressure well and when the heat comes, so do the INT's.

i would have crompton find their best defensive back and throw it right to him. get that out of the way early and maybe he will recover by the Ohio game.

Who was it that suggested in another thread that maybe Crompton should throw the ball as hard as possible at the nearest db's crotch? That might work.

Hitches, slants, bubble screens, then hitch and go. If they start cheating to the outside then I'd throw posts and TE seams since they'll still be trying to stop the middle runs.

The last person on earth that anyone including the Gator D expects to beat them on Saturday is Crompton... that makes him probably the only man on UT's roster that can.

Brilliant. The very last thing they would expect.

we have got to throw deep a few times..it amazed me that we didn't do it more on saturday

i would rather throw a deep ball and have a int over throwing a 8 yd out int anyday

Actually, we did have the deep reciever WIDE OPEN FOR A TD more than once.....Crompton was too busy throwing it to his stared down reciever that was double and triple covered.

The notion of a wide open attack in the first series is grand, but impractical. Kiffin has got to try to set a slow tempo to the game and, most importantly, calm everyone down, including what will be a ridiculously loud crowd at the outset.

Run, run, and run some more. Get a couple of first downs, at least. Run out the first few minutes of clock and make it boring to watch.

Doing something risky on the front end, if its three and out, the crowd will go insane. If Crompton throws a pick in the first series, the place will absolutley explode, and it will absolutely kill whatever is left of Crompton's confidence.

The long ball is sexy here and would give us all a brief moment of excitement if it worked, but odds are it wouldn't and it would come off as desperate. The percentages are in being conservative early and often.

I agree 100%. The big bomb sounds great but only if it works. The more likely thing to happen if they try is Crompyon throws a pick. Maybe even a pick six. Another possibility if they try to go deep is a sack with a fumble. I get the feeling the gators are going to be coming all out to get in Crompton's face and inside his fragile mind. If the Vol's attempt the big play and any of the things I mentioned happens, what does that do to the Vols the rest of the game?
Slow, steady, boring and let the defense play. I think that is our only shot to keep it close.

That is like saying you are going to line up a legless and armless man in the backfield to throw the gators off. They won't expect him to beat them because he ain't. Same deal with Crompton.
