Actually, if I was Kiffin, I'd start the game with a play action pass, rolling Crompton out of the pocket for an easy dump down to Bryce Brown, and if that is covered, he can scramble for a few yards and take a little hit, and hopefully that will get him in the flow of the game.
What would you do in the opening offensive series? We know they're going to put 8 or 9 (or 10 or 11) in the box and stuff any chance we have of running it. And to let Crompton throw it . . . well . . . . So I'm thinking we might see some kind of trick play in that first series. Maybe sneak Oku past the defense, pitch the ball to Teague on a fake end around and let him heave it downfield for a huge, unexpected gain. Burn their a$$es right off the bat and try to keep 'em honest. It's the only thing I can think of that might actually work.

man is this game going to hurt...
What's the difference? If there are 8-9 in the box, then it will be 3 runs and a punt to Brandon James.
I agree lawgator1 but there must be some mystery in our approach also. Having every play be just what it seems or what's expected will be too easy for a top-notch defense. We have to have that bit of uncertainty on every play coupled with a tenaciousness to hold on to the ball and not commit turnovers either early or late.
Long tedious series may not be crowd pleasers but they do tend to wear down the defense and keep our defense fresh. We must not have a succession of three and outs - that will be a killer.
To give a more serious response to your post, I'm not sure being practical is going to get the Vols anywhere in this game. If the gators have the box stacked, how are we going to pick up first downs running it? As another poster said, it's 3 and out and a punt to Brandon James. We have to take some risks to win. And note that I specifically indicated that I don't think I would let Crompton throw the long ball. I suggested giving it to Teague, who was a pretty successful high school QB, and letting him make the throw. Sure, it might not work, but even if it comes close, it might just make the defense a little more honest. And if it's picked off, that's pretty much the same as a punt, so nothing really lost as compared to going 3 and out.
Hitches, slants, bubble screens, then hitch and go. If they start cheating to the outside then I'd throw posts and TE seams since they'll still be trying to stop the middle runs.
The last person on earth that anyone including the Gator D expects to beat them on Saturday is Crompton... that makes him probably the only man on UT's roster that can.
we have got to throw deep a few times..it amazed me that we didn't do it more on saturday
i would rather throw a deep ball and have a int over throwing a 8 yd out int anyday
The notion of a wide open attack in the first series is grand, but impractical. Kiffin has got to try to set a slow tempo to the game and, most importantly, calm everyone down, including what will be a ridiculously loud crowd at the outset.
Run, run, and run some more. Get a couple of first downs, at least. Run out the first few minutes of clock and make it boring to watch.
Doing something risky on the front end, if its three and out, the crowd will go insane. If Crompton throws a pick in the first series, the place will absolutley explode, and it will absolutely kill whatever is left of Crompton's confidence.
The long ball is sexy here and would give us all a brief moment of excitement if it worked, but odds are it wouldn't and it would come off as desperate. The percentages are in being conservative early and often.
