Smokey Grays unveiled

But it takes away the orange, which is the point. A wise man once said (paraphrased again) that every game is SOMEONE'S first game. Why take away something special of the typical game day? I grew up listening and watching the Vols on the radio and tv. I finally went to my first game and the things that stand out to me are all the things that make UT special: the Pride, Vol Walk, and most importantly the sea of Orange. Why deprive someone of that in their first or only experience there? If I wasn't able to go as much as I can, I don't want my one time to be gimmicky.

You are speaking solely from your own perspective. I would put the odds of someone being disappointed at seeing grey unis at their first home experience at literally, 1/1000. Most people don't really care. They come to watch the game, and the result of the game will be their most vivid memory.

I don't fondly reflect on my first game in Neyland at the age of 8 and think, 'Dang those are some sharp unis we're sportin", as Vandy is whipping our rear ends. I remember staying through halftime and watching us storm back to beat them 38-36.

Traditions change, and basically you're projecting what YOU like about everything into how it should be. I get you think that's special, but what if the younger generations don't think they're all that great? What if their first experience they think the band songs are all old and outdated?

These "traditions" started because someone decided to start doing them. Heck the Vol Walk was started by Johnny Majors and copied from Ole Miss.

You're going to have to learn to live with the fact that for now, alternate jerseys and piped in stadium music is what recruits/the younger generation like. I don't care for a lot of it, but it's not the end of the world either. It's not like they are cutting major things, and it's not like we announced now that the orange and white uniforms are the alternates and the smokey grays are the normal uniforms.

How do you describe Tennessee to people? I sure don't describe it as a sea of gray, the wonderful gray wave running through the T, all those gray shakers in the stands, etc. And, after talking up Tennessee, if I take someone to his/her first game, it should be the men in Orange etc. I clearly remember the Orange jerseys running through the T in 2001, under the lights, before watching Clausen have a field day and Stallworth returning that punt against Vandy. Wouldn't have been the same only seeing some or part of what Tennessee football really is.

Again, you are making a mountain out of a molehill.

As little as 10 years ago, nobody would've dreamed of seeing the Vols wear anything but the Orange. If/when they make it to a National Championship I really don't want to see pictures of that team hoisting the trophy in black, but Hell, if that's what the players want.

And the key word your missing is "yet".

The biggest flaw in your argument is it is too personal and general. Using blanket statements to describe how "everyone" or "nobody" woukd or wouldn't feel won't cut it.

10 years ago, there were people who would have accepted alternate uniform combinations just like there are today. And there are those who wouldn't.

You know good and well that we would be as traditional as humanly possible if we played in the NC game, so drop the sensationalism.

I got news for you, if we made the NC game and won and wore the smokey grays, you'd be in the vast minority of people who gave a crap.

Do you honestly think had UT held on and beaten Georgia last year the win would be any less significant because we wore gray uniforms?

I've hated the black for the BaseVols. Always have. That's one thing I love that Raleigh did while here. I wish they would be like the softball team and wear orange socks.

NCAA basketball rules: Section 5, Articles 1-8 "Opposing teams must wear different colors. The home team wears light colors, the visiting team wears dark, but by mutual consent of both teams this rule can be modified."

So, unless the opposing team agrees, lighter gray cannot be worn at home, though Orange could as long as another team isn't orange, because it is light.

The Todd Raleigh era uniforms were awful; especially his first year.

If the players decided they prefer Florida's fight song better than Rocky Top, would that be ok?

No because it's not Tennessee. Smokey grey is Tennessee. This was brought up when the football team wore grey. Smokey grey is an alternate color for the school. The football team wore it decades ago.

I would be willing to bet that we don't wear the smokey grays as much once we get back to consistently winning. Alternate unis are tools used to manufacture excitement and anticipation for players and fans. When we are winning 10+ a year, the excitement is there automatically and alts really aren't needed as much. The fact that we have sucked recently means that we are in need of energy. I guarantee if Bama was in our position (and they are about as traditional as you get) they would have come out with something crazy by now.

So SECT and NCAAT or NIT

Nope these are NIT --
