small bit of news

I'm still not 100% sure we offered Brunetti. I wonder if the staff was aware that he wanted to make a decision soon and they were trying to delay that in case Scroggins didn't work out.

Couldn't Brunetti commit as soon as he was told to expect an offer? Unless the coaches explicitly told him not to, he could. I just think we got on Brunetti too late. He would have made a good second option. Maybe he didn't want that. I don't know. I do think the coaches are orchestrating every thing they do around landing Jesse Scroggins. They really think they have a good shot at landing him.

Again, we'll see. If he's a dud and Scroggins is a stud (and comes to UT, obviously) than I'd say no, because Tajh might've scared Jesse off. I'll admit I'm wrong if Boyd tears it up for the Tigers.

Personally, when talking about a recruit, I think you base it off what he has done up to that point. Whatever Boyd does down the road doesn't affect whether or not that was a good decision by Kiffin. Nor does what he did in the AA game IMO unless that decision is made after it. You don't get the gift of hindsight when talking about a High School recruit. He's either winning games for you or for somebody else.

I don't really know how it works. They may have told him if he was going to commit to keep it silent or something. Either way, I'm not sure they were fully ready to accept his commitment while Scroggins was still in limbo.

I would agree with that.

So, if Boyd turns out to be an absolute bust, it was still a bad decision by Kiffin? I'm not buying it. If Kiffin watched the guy and determined that he might be better than the guys he was playing, but not better than SEC athletes, than good for him (if he was correct).

That's true. It would make Kiffin look pretty good if Boyd bombs. But I don't think the wisdom of that decision hinges on whether or not Boyd does well. A year in the system and he's still better than having absolutely no one behind Nick Stephens.

We could potentially have Rozier, Scroggins, Lamaison, and one other guy behind him.

And you are confident in that lineup come September of next year? I'm not. I like Scroggins a lot, but he needs to sit in this system for a year. Lamaison? His lack of offers is telling. Surely Boyd would have beat him out. Truth is, we wouldn't have to lean on those guys if we had Boyd.

There's too many variables for me to say one way or the other. I don't know if Lamaison is any good. I don't know if the system will be simple enough to be picked up to where one of those guys will be a suitable back up to Stephens. I don't know if Stephens can be a suitable starter. Then again, he could do really well and end up starting a good portion of 2009. I think we'll just have to wait and see how things play out.

You're right. I'm not saying not taking Boyd was disastrous. I'm just saying we'd be better off with him than without him.

You think we'd be in with Scroggins if we had Boyd?

Yes, I do. It's not relevant to what I am trying to get across though. At this point, as you've suggested, we don't even know that Boyd won't be a better QB than Scroggins. You certainly don't know at the point that Kiffin told Boyd to take a hike whether we are going to be in on an elite guy this year or not. What if we whiff on all of our top targets? It's a possibility, but I don't think it has any bearing on whether it was a good or bad decision not to take Tajh Boyd.

You just don't turn away good prospects to land great ones the next year unless you have been recruiting like LSU and USC.

I don't see why not...that would still only give us 2 scholarships QB's for 2010. Scroggins would make it 3 competing for the starting spot
Right now, UT is about the only QB situation where there is no major QB competition going on. It's hard to find a championship caliber team where there isn't some stiff competition year after year.

I just noticed the story on Toney in GVX...

"True freshman running back Toney Williams will miss the upcoming season after suffering a torn ACL last week during offseason workouts, Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin said."

Thought I'd bring the thread back up top...
