I noticed a lot of people on here are not big on Slick being in next seasons WR rotation. Any reason why?

Ive heard that ole Slick is now fat and slow slick with no hands. But may be just a rumor, although i hope its not true.

Truth is that nobody outside of the coaches and Slick know what his progress is at this point. Also, if the media never asks about him then he won't be talked about. Seems to me that perhaps he is not WOWing anybody, but that doesn't mean he isn't progressing. He's young. Just wait and see...........

My sentiments exactly. It's not that anybody is down on him, it's just that it was going to be tough for a true freshman to get noticed playing behind Meachem, Swain and Smith.

I promise you he isn't fat. I stood by him and Meach in Tampa and Slick made Meach look small.
His speed is a little suspect but I don't think you can count him out. More of a slot receiver like B. Smith but I believe he will be a factor on 07/08

There are several reasons that I you don't hear about Slick Shelley in the discussion for the WR. They are as follows and in no particular order:
1. Kenny O'Neal
2. Brent Vinson
3. Gerald Jones
4. Possibly Dwight Jones
5. Austin Rodgers
6. Josh Briscoe
7. Lucas Taylor
8. Possibly Ahmad Paige
9. Possibly Markish Jones
10. Maybe Eric Berry

He was a freaking sophomore! Imagine if we shipped Robert Meachem out after his sophomore year! Imagine if we shipped Erik Ainge out after his sophomore year.

I'm really becoming tired of the increading number of people on this board who are ready to give up on freshmen and sophomores.

I don't give a rat's ass if he was a freshman, bottom line is he sucks! Hell a sophomore is 2 years away from a senior. So when he screws up next year, what is your rebuttal? He was only a junior. Quit making excuses and let's make players accountable. Fumbling, fielding bad punts, not knowing the correct routes, dropping passes, must I continue ? Well let me tell you what I am tired of 1) folks that accept mediocrity. 2) making excuses for players that are not that good

I don't accept mediocrity. I've been one of the more vocal opposition of the current staff in Knoxville.

Also, look at the examples I gave you: Meachem, Ainge, Swain, and more were ALL terrible as juniors.

And find a post where I ever make an excuse for a junior. The junior year is when most players either make it or break it for themselves. You HAVE to give high school players 2 years to learn. They are 18 and 19 year old kids.

My first 2 years in college, I knew jack about my major. NOTHING! My first 2 years of my profession, I was mediocre. NOW? I'm good. It's unrealistic to expect EVERY player to be amazing in their freshman or sophomore years. If Lucas Taylor continues to make boneheaded plays in 2007, then yeah, he stinks.

Plus, it's not OUR job to hold players accountable.

My thing of it is that it's the basics that Taylor doesn't have. Fumbling , dropped passes, bad decision on fielding punts is inexcusable. I will let the incorrect routes be attributed to being a sophomore. I expect middle school players to hold on to the ball.

I hear ya. I wasn't saying he was good. He needs to catch passes. However, the best NFL WRs drop passes, too.

I think bad decisions on fielding punts CAN be attributed to being an underclassmen for most.

So in your opinion, with the talent at receivers that we have coming in and the few that we have left, where do you see Taylor in the rotation ?

Think talent is being developed but game time coaching needs to improve. There are about 42 former Vols in the NFL.

I'll be honest, I don't think Taylor will see the field much, barring injuries.

Kenny O'Neal will help you forget losing Robert Meachem.

If I had to guess in January to what the rotation will look like in September, I'd guess:

Kenny O'Neal
Gerald Jones
Brent Vinson
Austin Rodgers
Josh Briscoe
Slick Shelley
Lucas Taylor

Then there's Quintin Hancock that the coaches loved last year. Who the heck knows? Besides O'Neal at the top, the next SEVEN could be in any order, depending on spring practice, summer maturity by themselves, then fall practice.

However, those 8 guys are:
2 5*
3 4*
3 3*

So we have the talent there, and I think the offense will be even better in 2007. Yeah yeah yeah, we lose our top 3 WRs, but I'm telling you, O'Neal, Jones, and the other 6 guys, can all grow into great players.

Ummm, I think Ainge was very solid as a Jr and far from terrible. Perhaps you meant sophomore for Ainge?
