BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Feb. 5, 2009) ? Southeastern Conference Commissioner Mike Slive has issued a public reprimand to University of Tennessee head football coach Lane Kiffin for his public comments made earlier today.

"Coach Kiffin has violated the Southeastern Conference Code of Ethics," Slive said. "SEC Bylaw 10.5.1 clearly states that coaches and administrators shall refrain from directed public criticism of other member institutions, their staffs or players.”

“The phone call to which Coach Kiffin referred to in his public comments is not a violation of SEC or NCAA rules. We expect our coaches to have an understanding and knowledge of conference and NCAA rules.”

isn't the issue here the number of phone calls?

Gimme a break.

Did they issue a reprimand to Spurrier for accusing Kiffin of cheating?

Besides, Kiffins comments were made at a private booster luncheon. Spurriers were to a reporter.

It is not a violation, but Kiffin knew that. He wanted Meyer to make sure he knew about what he was doing so he wouldn't do it again when UT has recruits on campus.

It was a smart play. He said that he was going to turn him right here - meaning to all the people at the conference and the media.

He had no intention of filing an NCAA complaint because it isn't one. He did get the Gators attention though.

Mission accomplished.

This is dumb. Spurrier did the same thing early. When he bit at Kiffin. Spurrier didn't get all this crap. But when Kiffin does it to "Son of the SEC", he gets burned by SEC Commissioners. Dumb. All They can do is hate becacuse ther scared of the Lane Train.

weren't LK's comments made at a private event? and in the same regard, didn't SOS make disparaging remarks about Kiffin at a FORMAL PRESS CONFERENCE... with no consequence?

Sounds like the SEC is now handing out reprimands based on CONTEXT AND TONE, rather than severity.

strange. guess they just don't want horse heads to start showing up in beds.

Odd. Out of all the constant criticism and disparaging made amongts the SEC the past few years, this is the first tme I've ever seen this rule cited.

Anyone want to go to Destin for the next round of meetings for the conference? This stuff keeps up and Meyer might be challenging CLK to a fight in the parking lot at 10.

Loved this comment after Low's article on the incident...

"I love the fact that Tennessee will never even will an SEC East Title as long as Meyer is at Florida. If I were Kiffin I wouldnt be adding fuel to the fire otherwise Florida might decide to win by 50 instead of 40 next year. Kiffin hasnt proven anything and I'm sure Meyer's response would be I cant hear you because my RINGS are getting in the way. Kiffin can check out the crystal balls that he will never win next year when the vols visit the SWAMP."

Hell Dude! We won the east last year with Fulmer.

And, Meyer's response was to go crying to daddy.

Who cares? I hope he pisses them all off. Look where being nice has gotten us! Lane will eventually have to back up the smack talk on the field, and I think he will in the next 3-4 years.

Not really. During a contact period, after September of the athlete's Senior Year, the school can make calls "at its discretion". It's in Rule 13.x.x.x.x of the NCAA bylaws, which you can download in pdf format on the ncaa website.

It might be "dirty" or "underhanded" to barrage a recruit with calls during an official visit to another school, but it's not a rules violation.

Apparently CUM is intensely sensitive. I heard he locked himself in his office and cried all morning after these allegations were made. It is just a good thing that he has an AD who will stick up for him when these bullies start making comments about him.
