Single Digit loss seasons

Honest question. During this run that you all love so much how many games do you remember? Without looking anything up or at any highlights. There are honestly 3 for me. Now how many tourney do you remember? In whichever thread people are talking about playing Sampson back to back. I would also bet people remember more about Bruce's EE. Clunzo's run from nowhere, the losses under Barnes then they do about the regular season. A tournament run to the FF is way more meaningful in the long run.

Maybe, maybe not.

South Carolina was garbage before their FF run and have been since. They clearly haven't built off that run. I would argue most people remember it because it sticks out like a sore thumb, aka most people see it as more a fluke than anything.

Georgia got to a FF in 1983. How'd that work out? Without looking it up, would anyone actually know they made a FF? Does the average Georgia fan even realize they made one?

I want us to make a FF but for us it would be vindication that we're a program that deserves respect and it's a missing piece, and I think we'd actually build off of it. But a FF alone doesn't do that.

I don’t know if I’ve ever seen any video of the two Ralph/VA losses. I watched the first half of the last Ernie/Bernie/Mears game last night (versus 3 loss Syracuse with 32 year old Boeheim). It’s weird how little they substitute and how good players are at knocking down the 8-15 foot jump shots. Also odd is having just 2 refs and all of the jump balls. Darden through several balls away trying to make tge highlight film. Bernard is a beast. Refs called at least 5 charges. 3 Tennessee players went to halftime with 3 fouls (King, Grunfeld, and Jackson will foul out). Dick Enberg and Billy Packer on CBS. Oh my!

Didn’t Clarke decommit under Tyndall too? Not one of the guys you mentioned was Top 50, I think only 1 was Top 100 actually.
BTO you know he decommitted when the Tyndall allegations were revealed. This is not a Tyndall/Barnes comparison. It’s an inaccurate statement that high recruits were not looking at Tennessee.

The post you replied to said TOP recruits are not highly rated. Highly rated is a big net to cast..TOP is very specific. We weren't regularly getting 5 stars till Barnes got here. We are consistently having seasons with MULTIPLE top 50 recruits.. when is the last time that happened? Barnes has earned his contract and he isn't finished yet.

That being said....Big props to Vol nation to the response to ZZ's familys' issues. It's things like that that make me proud to be a Vol Fan. We are an exceptional fan base. Let's focus on that part of fandom instead of all this negative Nancy crap.. If we focus on being that fanbase the recruits will keep flocking. Stop all the whinging and whining. I would take the results of that gofund me over a FF any day, end of story.

I remember exciting regular season wins way more than I do NCAAT wins and losses. They are fleeting and don’t stand the test of time. Actually I forget about NCAAT losses pretty quickly. And the SECT is pretty much a total non event to me. It’s just a money grab. I never watch it and maybe check the scores every now and then. But all those wins over Kentucky since the Mears years, the Wille Burton bomb against LSU, the Texas wins in Pearls first years, owning Florida the two years they won their nattys, the Skylar bomb against #1 Kansas, and so many more. They stick with me forever and give me a burst of energy when I think about them.

As far as NCAAT wins, I basically only remember the Lofton corner 3 vs Winthrop. But I’m really bad at remembering sports related stuff

Trading a 5 really fun seasons for 1 FF and a bunch of miserable season would be like chopping your man parts off to sleep with Gal Gadot one single time, or whoever floats your boat. My point is, that one single time of fun is not worth the misery of constant losing seasons. I prefer to enjoy sustained success.
She’s pretty hot though…

Plenty. Any big game like beating Kansas or Arizona this year, the big conference wins like Auburn and KY (not all though I do concede) is usually memorable. I’d guess 3-4 per year in general.

Listen, the games & teams added have changed the measurements. I recall when only 1 conference team made the tournament. Maryland, one year, was #1 in the country, lost to NC State in the ACC tournament finals in OT and had to go the the NIT, with probably the best team in the country.
Yeah that David Thompson/Monte Towe NCSU team was really fun to watch.

80% chance in round one times 55% chance in round two equals less than fifty%.
If you Google percent chance of reaching the sweet 16 by seed then you’ll see 3 seeds are 53% and 2 seeds are 64%.

Coach Barnes has had single digit loss seasons in 4 of the last 5 years. That hasn’t happened since Ernie, Bernie, and Mears were in their final year.

Mears lost less than 10 games 14 years in a row. His second through his final (15th) season.

Mears played fewer games, so it was easier to avoid double digit loss seasons. But he also won more than 75% in 8 of his 15 seasons. EVERY year Mears coached was a winning season. Only Bruce in 6 years and Green in 4 (since John Mauer through 1947) also never finished .500 or below. TN has won 75% or better in 27 out of 113 seasons - less than a quarter of the time.

Mears won at least 2 out of 3 in 11 of 15 seasons. Green never lost more than a third of his games. Bruce lost a third of his games in 2 out of 6 seasons including 2 of his last three. TN has finished 0.667 or better in 48 of 113 years.

Mears has 6 of TN’s winningest (%) 25 seasons. Bruce has 2 (including the 5th best). Green has one of the best 25 winning percentages in a season. Barnes has 2 (including the 6th best) although the current season could still drop out of the top 25.
Good stuff

He said Sweet 16. If we’re a 2 seed it is right where I said, at 64%. A 3 and it’s still 53% and this is before we know opponents. I believe we will be higher than that 3 seed percentage if that’s the number that applies to us once brackets are released but we shall see.
Yea we are projected 3 by most so that’s what I was going off of, 53% is closer to 45% than 65-70%.

It is but we also have no idea who we’re playing yet so it’s all conjecture at this point. I just don’t believe our odds are as low as 45% to reach the Sweet 16 no matter what the bracket shows next week.
