I called for Simms to be benched last week in favor of Bray. I'm still not sure that wouldn't be the best move for the future; however, I was impressed with Simms today. We had some serious pass protection problems, and he handled them fairly well. Obviously, he can't make mistakes like the pick in the endzone, but I thought he responded strong and made some very nice throws. 270 yds against that secondary isn't bad. Kudos to him, and let's hope he keeps improving.

I like that we have a vertical passing game again after I don't know how long but Simms just lacks accuracy on too many plays for my liking.

Definitely agree! He still has too much of a tendency to stare down the primary receiver, but he definitely has the arm to make any throw. Hopefully this game for him was like the one Crompton had at Auburn, and hopefully similar results will follow.

Still doesn't know how to go through his progressions.

I think he's being given limited reads. I thought he made some nice checkdowns in the second half particularly flipping it out to the fullback when Stocker was covered. It's babysteps with him right now, but he was clearly better today than last week.

This.

And the interceptions were horrible. He stared down the receiver the entire time. He HAS to get better if we want to go to a bowl game.

Regardless of improvement or not he's our guy. He's got flashes of good and bad. Let's hope for more of the former going forward.

Yep, makes no difference, he's our guy. The best option at this point.

I saw nothing today that encouraged me at ALL. Both passing touchdowns were caused by horrible blown assignments by Gator defenders and nothing that Simms did.

1) He still cannot progress through routes (see INT right in front of Moore)
2) He is horribly inaccurate.
3) He has a strong arm and really tries to muscle the ball too often - no touch.
4) He has a terrible grip on the football. He grips it deeply in his palm which is unlike any of the good-to-great QBs. He grips it like a kid with small hands would grip it. I am convinced this is a very large reason for his inaccuracy.
5) He throws to wide open receivers (when he sees them) at least 1 second too late, and the windows close quickly.
6) He's bad.

Do you think they are planning to redshirt Bray? I would have thought he would have least saw the field by now. Can he really be that much worse than Simms? I think Simms will get better, but i also think that Bray should be getting some time.

The one thing I liked: Chaney wasn't afraid to throw the ball vertically even when Simms was struggling. Kudos to him for that.

He did see the field against UT-Martin. Can't be redshirted.

Sorry don't agree. Simms has numerous flaws, that IMO, will continue all season. 1. Stares down receivers - - don't see this changing as he has the 'deer in the headlights' look. 2. Passing motion is horrible along with accuracy. 3. 'Heaves' the ball instead of 'passes' the ball. 4. Appears to have the attitude that nothing is his fault (see quote from game.)
Sorry, daddy Simms raised 2 pretty mediocre qb's for sons and we have 1 of them. Can't envision Simms leading this team. Looks like Crompton at the beginning of last season. The only difference JC had the skills that needed brought out - - Simms doesn't have the skills.
I'm Vol thru-and-thru but realistic.

He's not a great qb and never, ever will be. However, it's ridiculous to pretend he's as bad as Crompton was last year at the same time. Crompton threw for about 80 yds against UF last year. Hopefully, we can continue to improve next game, and then we can possibly get Jones back for LSU.

You do realize that 1. Brantley's TD came from a blown coverage. 2. Those blown coverages were a result of great playcalling 3. He began progressing through routes after the Moore INT 4. He's not terribly inaccurate he just doesn't have much time to set his feet before pressure is in his face.

Simms just doesn't have the goods to be a great QB. That is still not a reason to bash him the way several on this board have. Just because a QB makes a few bad decisions and throws a couple of Int's, it doesn't mean he is "trash," as I've seen him described in another thread. He will never be Peyton Manning, but he may very well turn into a Greg McElroy by the end of his career. If, somehow, he can get his mind right when pressure is on, he could be a competent game managing QB that doesn't make the plays that get us beat. Let's hope for that transformation, and if it doesn't happen, let's not pile on by calling him names and booing him.

Which is why, IMO, that he will not lead this team successfully. This is the SEC, and UT is getting left behind with qb play like Simms.

Nice job avoiding responding to your stupid assertion that Simms is as bad as Crompton last year at the same time.

Bray is not the answer this year..you see how Simms handles the pressure. Some good some bad.. really bad. The biggest weakness of our team is at qb it affects the whole team including run game, Defense strung out whole game, bigger chance of mistakes on special teams..etc..We just have to improve and tired of the coach speak about improving but now I see it is the truth! The Vols have the talent but need to grow up and going on the road after UAB will be a interesting experience.GBO!!

I agree, he went right back after Florida. That showed some guts. I like that kind of coaching.

I thought you could play them a certain amount and still redshirt them.

"However, NCAA rules are quite clear on the use of redshirt status: any participation in any competition counts as a season of eligibility. For example, even a single play in a football game counts as participation for an entire season, so coaches cannot play redshirt players at the end of a game simply to get them some experience."

This. I believe UGA burned Marlon Brown's redshirt last year by using him on one play.
