I can't seem to remember a single instance where Simms has been under pressure and just throws the ball away instead of taking a sack.

Is he coached not to throw the ball away, or does he just lack the ability?

He is getting pressured constantly. When he steps up he makes the throw. When he is pressured he needs to throw it away. He will learn it. He will have plenty of pressure opportunities coming up soon.

This should be an interesting thread. There has been much debate regarding Simms "holding the ball" and "throwing it away to avoid the sack." Some think he doesnt have enough time due to poor blocking by the big uglies and others feel he hesitates to throw it away. I too, have been upset at times, seeing him hold the ball longer than needed. I have heard by the "experts" that a good qb should have a internal clock that tells them to get rid of the ball. I think Simms will eventually learn this, but with alot of other issues with this team, it's gonna take time. I do have to admire Simms for all the hits he has taken, seems pretty tough. Overall, I think it is a combination of poor blocking and Simms holding the ball to long. It will be interesting to see how it pans out over the rest of the season. Good Luck!

a lot of his pressure is straight up the middle its hard to throw the ball away.

I think he has done a great job. It seems like he get's pressure every single throw. And when he has time he actually looks accurate.

That would require him having time to scramble out of the pocket to throw it away. Unless you want multiple intentional grounding calls every game.

Double post... but it seems a lot of his incompletions are due to the WR's/Luke Stocker not knowing how to catch a bullet.

"Through the hands of Stocker" --- how many times have we heard this throughout the season?

If Stocker had played ANYWHERE to the AA potential he supposedly had this year we would be staring at a winning record.

I understand there are times where taking a sack is the smarter option, but if he has ample time to throw, no one is open, and a defender is closing in for the sack he needs to get rid of the ball. Unless, of course, he lacks the arm strength to get the ball out of bounds.

I'm looking forward to Georgia's 3-4 defensive scheme. I think Simms will play his best game of the year.

He doesn't even have enough time to throw it away most of the time.

He's sacked before he can even drop back, let alone get far enough back to avoid an intentional grounding.

During the LSU game, someone on here said they timed Simms holding the ball for 4-5 seconds. If nothing is there, it would be better to throw it away than to take a sack for 5-10 yrd loss. But in most cases, not all his fault and not all olines fault.

For a quarterback to throw the ball away he has to be able to have a clear view of the sideline, not have someone hitting him in the face and focus. The pocket on alot of his sacks has collapsed pretty quick. Also his size limits him as well. He has had more balls batted back in his face than a UT quarterback in a long time. Give him time, he is starting to settle in.

As for Luke Stocker, It is easy for a defense to take away a tight end and eliminate his being a factor in a game. One way is through an effective pass rush, which causes him to have to be a blocker on most plays.

Give these guys time...I think Dooley will turn out to be a pretty darn good coach.

I think he holds the ball too long. I have said it all year long. He is too busy locked onto the main route reciever and doesn't notice his checkdown who is wide open. I wish he would hit Poole with a checkdown every now and then. Put the ball in your playmakers hands. He is too busy looking for the big downfield route. I dont see this changing anytime soon. Our pass protection has sucked , but he is still taking too long in the pocket. I wish we would roll him out and get some open lanes for him to look at.

Really? I kinda think we'd have a winning record if anybody played better than they did down in Baton Rouge, Stocker included.

Oh I agree. Everyone included. But the previous post just said Stocker. Stocker does not make the team even though he was a great playmaker last year and has not caught much of anything this season so far. How bad does he have to feel? Top TE coming out last year and he decided to stay put. That is UT love.
