Based on this performance, he's good. He's not a game manager, he's good. He's not great, he's good. Got it? His release is slow. His footwork is sloppy. But you can win with him. He's accurate. Stocker dropped 3 of his passes. He got a lot of time. He's good. He's better than Crompton. He's tougher. Most importantly, he's a better leader. You all will see. Drunk out.

So basically, he's a dead man walking sloppily

We will see Simms for exactly what he is next week. Oregon will give us a good idea of where he is at (along with the rest of the team).

He put up serviceable numbers against a less than serviceable opponent. But I guess there's something to build off there. However, I wouldn't call him "good" until at least after the Oregon game. Unless he just completely stinks the place up, I won't make any sound judgement calls until I see another 2 or 3 games myself. I think he's quite a bit ahead of Bray, so he's really our only option right now. He doesn't have the skillset of Crompton, but if his mindset is tougher, that's still an upgrade IMO. Crompton pretty much just folded under pressure early on last season. If Simms has the mental strength to work through the rough spots(because there's gonna be some), then I think he'll be fine. But if he folds under pressure like Crompton, we're in serious trouble.

I think he looked shaky tonight. Hopefully the experience of getting his feet wet as a Volunteer will steady him some for next week. If not, we'll be in for a long night.

Simms looked very average tonight. I don't think he's going to win too many games for us. I hope I'm wrong, but if he continues to get no time to throw the ball then he's dead meat.

He does show accuracy on short patterns, with a few going high, but that can be corrected. That's a good thing because he'll be throwing a lot of those next week against a good defense.

Ive never seen a quarterback stare down receivers as much as Simms.

I guess you didn't watch any games last year then. Simms made good decisions tonight, I was happy with where he decided to go with the football. Didn't hit all of his passes, and missed a few other open men, but didn't make any "what was he thinking" decisions that we saw last year even in the WKU game.

I agree with OP. I thought he played really well. I'll be honest, despite Crompton's eventual turn-around, I've had QB shakes for two years whenever a UT QB goes back for a pass.

However, I was shocked when Bray came into the game. It seemed like a message to me; coaching staff, I think, hopes Bray is ready sooner rather than later.

Or maybe they figured this was as good a time to get a look at him as any...you are really reaching if you are reading into a QB substitution when you are leading a team 50-0 in the third.

That said I find it hilarious people worrying about Simms after what we have went through at QB the past 2 years. Not a single one of his passes hit the hands of a defender before hitting a Vol. If we had a QB that could have pulled that off the past 2 years we wouldn't be on our third coach now. I think we got so used to being on the edge of a heart attack anytime a QB dropped back the past 2 years we see bogeymen everywhere. Simms has not showed he is any type of all conference (not even all-OVC) but he has not shown anything that should cause the hand wringing everyone seems to want and with the performance Bray put up it should be sinking in by this point that he is the horse we have to ride for now.

For the next few weeks I feel a lot more comfortable with him behind center than Bray after that things might change. Bray might get better used to the level of competition and the line might gel a bit more but honestly I would rather Simms back there for now. the coaches didn't show it much (at all) but I have a sneaking suspicion that Chaney will do with Simms what he did with Crompton (move him out of the pocket on bootlegs a lot) to make up for the lines problems. That is just not a realistic possibility with Bray really as he is pretty much a statue. Once the line gels I think Bray might get a shot, if Simms has not locked up the job, and do well. I honestly was hoping they would put in Nance and preserve Brays red-shirt.

Give him time. I hope he improves, but one thing for sure, he looks better than UF's QB on day 1. Hope that trend continues.

Our offense's success will be predicated on the O line's success. We will have to dominate the running game to open up the easy pass. I trust in our staff and especially Chaney's coaching abilities.

I still contend that we finish 3rd in the SEC. You heard me. I have always said that the East is a toss up.

Simms didn't see the type of serious pressure today that he will see against a legitimate opponent. He also had the advantage of having his receivers playing against far inferior talent. All of this changes when we go up against Oregon.

Simms td to D. Moore is a pick in SEC play. If you want, you could blame a piss poor throw on G. Jones' injury.

We were up by a large margin and it was the perfect time to get the 2's some reps. He got a whole quarter and some change worth of critical game experience. Its not that the staff thinks Simms sucks, its just Bray needed to get his feet wet and we were up big.
