Despite the loss, there was great improvement from week 1 to week 2. In week 1, the defense was overwhelmed on the ground, seemingly unable to even line up. This week they did an excellent job stopping the run for 3 1/2 quarters, and BYU had a much better line than GA St. They seemed to run out of gas in the overtime. The bust on pass defense with 21 seconds to play was horrible, but it was one play.

On the other hand, the offense ran the ball very well, piling up 249 yards on the ground. The problem was the red zone, where they ended up kicking 3 field goals (in regulation) Converting just one of those puts the game out of reach. Usually, when a team moves the ball up and down the field but stalls in the red zone it is because of a lack of ability to run, since pass defense becomes much easier when the field shrinks. But 249 yards belies that, so there may be another reason.

It could be simply a lack of confidence. This program seems to have lost the belief that they will win. This hasn't happened just this year, it has been building for 10 years. I think Pruitt will restore that confidence, because he has confidence in himself, but it will take time. It took time to get here, it will take time to get back. This team improved greatly from week 1 to week 2. It will continue to improve this season as the younger players gain experience and have some success, building confidence. In 1988, the last time TN started 0-2, the Vols started 0-6, finished 5-6. The next year they went 11-1, finished #5 in the country. It was the beginning of the great 90s run that included the '98 Natty.

I suggest we don't panic, look at the big picture, and support your team every week. The crowd was the reason for at least 2 procedure penalties by BYU in the 1st Qtr.

The D played well enough to win. The OL played well enough to win. The kicking game was good enough to win.... actually better than that. The receivers played well enough to win. The RB's definitely played well enough to win... Who are we missing?

Oh yeah, the QB DID NOT play well enough to win. Not close. Not even in the same universe.

Why did Pruitt hire Ansley to be DC in the off season? It seems to me that this move has hurt the team thus far. The team can’t even line up right. Also has Elijah Simmons played along the D line any yet? I had read good things about him until game week came and he was on the scout team.

I don’t think panic is the problem right now. Apathy is the issue now, at least with me. The past 10 years have lowered my expectations to the point that I’m not that upset with a loss, especially in the SEC, and that’s a mindset that may have infected the team as well.

When I look at the big picture, it’s not a pretty one, (again, in my opinion). In our Glory Days, for the most part Georgia was down, Florida was down, and even Alabama was vulnerable. Now they are established top tier programs fighting for the SEC/National Championship (possibility with the exception of Florida, time will tell) while we are now hoping for a bowl game, any bowl game, and even Vanderbilt has improved. This year, we’re reduced to simply looking for a win, and unbelievably, maybe now perhaps even a little bit concerned with Chattanooga, for goodness sake.

I was impressed with the support that was shown this past week by our fans. Yes, there was shock and anger, justifiably so. But Saturday night Neyland was rocking, and a newcomer would have thought we were contending for an undefeated season rather than searching for our first win of the year.

Is there hope? Of course there is! We do have talent on the field, on the sidelines, and even in the coaching booth. But we’re a sick football team right now, in Intensive Care. But I’m not ready to pull the plug just yet. Go. Big. Orange.

I think you're missing the point of what's wrong with our football program. Anyone here old enough to remember what they called the undefeated Miami Dolphins defense? It was called the "no-name" defense because they didn't have any really talented players. And yet they won! Why? Because they had something this team does not have (nor does it seem like the coaches are instilling in them). Discipline!! They don't act like a team, they don't play like a team, they are not a team. They are just a bunch of individuals playing a team sport. A very big difference between those two statements. Lack of discipline is what is killing this team. And until we start enforcing and demanding it....we're going to keep losing I don't care who we get. We can win with this team....if they will have the disciple to play as a team. Cover for each other. Know each other's weaknesses and strengths and build on those. We can have a winning season when we understand the one thing we severely lack...discipline. On all levels. My two cents.

There is a lot of truth in this post.
I remember the era very well. A big part of the reason UGA, ALA. and USCe were down was because we put them there. They revived and helped put us down. We gave up our turf on the recruiting trail and then on the field. Pruitt is in the process of taking back our swagger on the recruiting front. If he can maintain that momentum, then he is the man and better days are coming. I have no choice but to see if it continues to happen.
