This just came to me today while a fellow fan and I were discussing the history of Smokey. Did we have a husky dog on the sideline for the ‘92 Fiesta Bowl vs Penn State? I know Smokey had heat exhaustion earlier that year at the UCLA game, and I was thinking he was completely out by the time the bowl game came. Just wondering. Been a long time ago, so my memory may not be correct.

I sure hope not. In the hills of Eastern Washington “Husky” is a foul word and poor excuse of a dog.

Nothing really to do with the dog, it just happens to be the mascot of the hated Washington Huskies. The state is pretty much divided between city folk west of the Cascades (Husky fans) and farmers and loggers to the East (Coug fans). I worked near Seattle for 30 years and had my fill of Husky fans. Plus my wife is a Coug alum.

I’d love to see the Palouse. Looks like beautiful country in pictures.

Back to my original post, does anyone know? It doesn’t really matter, it’s just got me miffed. I think I may be, to quote Roger Clemens, misremembering the facts.

I may be wrong, but here is how I recall that story:

1) I was at the game were Smokey overheated. It was 100-110 on the field. We possibly still had turf instead of grass. One of first games of year. Hottest game I've ever attended in Knoxville. Do not recall our opponent. Don't think it was UCLA, but I may be wrong.
2) It seems that Smokey sat out a few games, but was back by mid-season.
3) I don't recall a Husky dog at the bowl. We can go to the tapes...

Looked up Smokey on Wikipedia. I guess I did remember incorrectly. He did overheat at the UCLA game and was replaced by another Blue Tick named Woody. That Smokey died that offseason of a brain tumor. I guess I was wrong in my recollection because Wikipedia is the gospel ;)

It's a different version of beauty that say the Smokies, or the Rockies but I grew to love it there during the 10 or so years I lived in the area. Good fishing and backpacking within easy driving distances too.

Unless you are a closet Husky (Washington type), no need yet. Stay tuned though. I tend to type before I think from time to time and that leads to some stupid posts on my part.

As to dogs in general, I've pretty much had one or more all my life except during my extended college years. Couldn't figure out how to hide them in the dorms.
