The 247 podcast said it's unlikely that Steele will be retained. Unless he gets a title like AHC and complete control of the D, I don't see it happening.

During the press conference and listening to Sport Animal 990 interview with CJH, DC is got to be someone who he trust,( and will have complete control) that can handle the calls, since CJH will be busy calling offensive plays.
Question should be, does he trust Steele to give him complete control?

Also per the podcast, Heupel is probably happy to leave Shannon behind.

Why wouldn't he have complete control? Heupel isn't a defensive guy. I would hope he WOULD give complete control of the defense over to the DC. To me, giving Steele the title of AHC and control of the D isn't exactly an insurmountable roadblock. I would expect those things to be a given honestly.

I agree, plus looks like Steele wants to retire with the Big Orange, isn’t he in his mid 60’s, no spring chicken. Not like he is going to try and sabotage the HC to become the HC. No time for that.

What's wrong with Shannon? 2019 UCF led the country in tackles for loss (9.0 per game). This past season his defense led the nation in fumbles recovered with 13 and ranked sixth in the country in forced turnovers with 22. He's won three national championships as a coach and a player. While defensive coordinator for the Hurricanes, his defenses ranked in the top 10 in the nation in five of six seasons. While at UF, his defense ranked fifth in the nation in total defense in 2016, allowing just 293.0 yards per game, and also the second-best pass defense in the country, allowing opponents 148.5 yards per game.

So, your problem couldn't be coaching. You make it sound like he's garbage.

I like Steele but if we can get a younger, more adaptable DC then we should

I'm not too keen on Elarbee after looking at PFF's OL rankings for the past 2 years:

2020

62. Tennessee
There was some concern entering the season with how this offensive line would hold up outside of Trey Smith and Georgia transfer Cade Mays. And it hasn’t been too pretty. To no one’s surprise, Smith has been the top performer of this group, though he hasn’t quite taken the kind of step forward that many expected. Smith recorded a 78.6 PFF grade in 2019, but that has taken a dip to 74.9 this season.

114. UCF
UCF’s offense led by Dillon Gabriel has been a strong one throughout 2020 despite an underwhelming 6-3 record, but the offensive line has prevented them from even further success more than anything. Six different linemen have played substantial snaps for UCF this season, and not one has posted a PFF grade above 60.0. Altogether they have combined for the eighth-worst offensive line PFF grade in the FBS, and every single one has allowed double-digit pressures.

2019

113. Tennessee
Highest-graded player: OG Trey Smith – 77.7 (14th)
Without Smith, the Volunteers' overall grades plummet and look just downright awful on the offensive line. Collectively, they ranked 124th in pass-blocking grade and 76th in run-blocking grade, all but undoing a great season by Smith, who finished as the 14th highest-graded guard in the country.

79. UCF
Highest-graded player: C Jordan Johnson – 63.9 (70th)
The Knights' offensive line had much better success on the ground than they did in pass protection, finishing with the 68th-best run-blocking grade as a unit but just 89th-best in the passing game. Johnson was a true road grader at center and helped lead their play along the interior to a top-35 grade on the ground.

Maybe I'm confused....But why would he not give Steele complete control over the D? Dude's one of the most sought after DC's in the game and has fielded great defenses. Plus he can recruit which we need. Let Heupel focus on offense and let Steele run the D.

Steele will be gone, which might make it hard for Gardner, I’ve also heard that Steve Sark is trying very hard to get Odom to Texas. Hopefully with Heupel working under him we will get a look. Seeming like he may be hard to pull from Arkansas though.

Steele has to want complete control of the D before we can give it to him
