Who will have their squad better prepared to stop the opposing offense?

I have a lot of respect for everything Chavis did at UT. His work at LSU and A&M is similarly awesome.

That being said, I'm also amazed by Shoop. His schemes and play calling have been very successful. Unlike Chavis, Shoop's defenses at Vanderbilt and PSU were not full of 4 and 5 star caliber players. Even at UT, we have issues with depth at several defensive positions on account of our injuries. Still, I think many of us have been impressed with his adjustments and how he calls a game.

Overall, I credit Shoop with being the superior tactician, though Chavis knows how to use a talent/depth advantage. I'm hoping Dobbs can do just enough to keep the Chief on his heels. I think Shoop is going to have to be creative with his linebackers this week, and I'm fully confident he'll have our boys ready for Saturday from the first play to the last.

How do you see these two coaches calling the game this weekend? Who calls it better?

Just like the UT offense, the defense gets off to a slow start as well. Once they lock in though, they are tough.

Chavis (just like a lot of other DCs) has trouble with scrambling QBs.

I do think Shoop is a superior tactician, but there were some elements of "3rd and Chavis" on Georgia's final drive Saturday.

Love me some Chief, but Shoop is vastly superior with the halftime adjustments.

Both are excellent Defensive Coordinators.

We giving up over 140 yds per game rushing on average....and that's with Appy State, Ohio, and VT on the schedule....

Our D has looked like an SEC defense for 2 QTRs...and that was against Fla...

Chief all day right now....

And Shoop's worst game hopefully was against UGA...because he called an absolute horrible game against the pups!

I tend to agree but at times Chavis pissed me off as well.

I've been confused who to blame. Our guys would allow 5-10 yards for their running back while trying to strip the ball instead of tackling. All game long, and I've wondered if they were told to go all in for the strip? I don't know, just bothered me a few times while watching. Farh shoop!

They are no doubt coached to do this right? Has anyone on the staff addressed this at all? Was very frustrating to watch during the Georgia game. Those extra two, three yards really extended drives for them. If those strips led to more fumbles we'd be having a very different conversation. But they aren't, you're right.

Remember that Florida game where Chavis made up the no-down-linemen scheme, and all our DLs and LBs were just pacing around like hungry jungle cats before each snap? That was weird and awesome.

I like that Shoop has experience doing more with less. Hopefully that will serve well since we have been bit by the injury bug.

For me, there's no need to compare them.

How well did Chief fare with UF and UGA while at UT as DC? Shoop's record so far is he's batting a thousand. Seems I recall Chavis on the losing end a few times while on The Hill. If #s and stats actually mean anything that is.

I really like Shoop but at this time I think Chavis has the upper hand. I did not like Shoop's strategy against GA and his team does not come out ready to play. Almost every opponent scores on their first drive and every opponent has scored first. Not something you can hang your hat on.

Roger that....

We've played the weakest part of our schedule...Ole Sis shut UGA's running game down easily....and we gave up 181 yards against them.

Right now--I expect aTm to hang 45 on us and for it to be a track meet....in a very hostile environment....:salute:

Shoop v Chavis? May not come to that if Chief forgets his credentials and gets hassled by security who refuses him access to the field (again).

My only complaint of Chavis coached defenses is that they tended to give up late scores leading to heartbreaking losses. So far the 2016 Vols look to be the opposite

Ha-ha I don't know this one. Story?

He was trying to get on the field for warmups last Saturday and some dude in a "security" jacket turned him away because he didn't have his credentials. He went back towards the tunnel dumbfounded. Pretty funny actually. It was on the college game show with the lady, the tatooed runt, and Golic.

I like Shoop over Chef Boyardee...however, Chef is top notch. Shoop has had to hide the deficiencies of our depleted LB corp. That's what is hurting our D right now.

Is this the first QB we faced who can run? I think our defense could have problems in this game. As others have noted, georgia ran the ball well on us, and they aren't all that good. Our defensive line has been fairly good at times and not so good at others. Our LBs, with the injuries, are pretty average now at best. We do have two DEs who can rush the passer, which is all the more reason to get a lead.
