Shoop: Vols' defensive struggles 'not acceptable'

Come on, you know as well as I do that a 260-lb guy who couldn't get playing time at defensive end should be an impenetrable fortress. Players who miss half the season with injury have no excuse not making every tackle in front of them. DBs whose names were not on the programs at the start of the season should be on par with the all-SEC performers at other schools. Anything less than that is an excuse and we don't stand for those at Tennessee.

You know what we really need? Somebody to blame. Do we have any northerners coaching our team? Maybe we should fire them all and demolish the stadium. It's not working for us, either.

Your sarcasm is laced with logic that can't be denied ....yet they will deny it .

Wear down the opposing offense. You see the Kentucky and Missouri O-line and running backs in the fourth quarter? They were gassed. I predict soon this defense will be picked up by all levels of football...including the Pros.

I'll get burned saying this but at this point screw it.........anyway to me it's nice to hear somebody just own up to poor play without coach speak blah blah blah. Call it like it is and move on. Poor execution, no continuity, my responsibility still.

That was my first thought as well. I have not been happy with the defensive performance at all. One of the worst TN defensives I've ever seen in my 26 years of watching, but I for one refreshed to not hear excuses and cliches about why were not performing. Man up, say you've made mistakes, and will fix it. Plain and simple.

I love when someone offers an excuse and follows it up with the 'certainly no excuse' line.

It's like insulting someone and saying, "No offense."

yep...should use "with all due respect", at least that one is in the Geneva Convention.

Lets hope Webb gets tired like the 2 on Missouri did

I have to admit Shoop does have a very innovative approach to playing defense. It has worked against Kentucky and Missouri. Wear the backs out in the first half by making them run a series of 40+ yd sprints.

To be fair, injuries have decimated the defensive line. Unfortunately, we compensate for this by having linebackers who are either too slow or too lost and out of position to make plays.

BUT, there is no excuse for the yardage rung up on the Vols over the last two weeks.

Arent we actually rotating backup OL on the DL now? Or am I wrong? I thought I heard that somewhere.

You're wrong. We aren't playing backup OLs at DT. We're playing DTs Vickers, Picou and Kongbo (who's up to 285lb), and some of our DEs in the DT rotation...Phillips and Mixon primarily. Mosley supposedly was moved over to DT but I don't think he's in the rotation by any stretch.

Are you aware of the difference between a reason and an excuse? A coach giving an explanation of why a unit is struggling, and then saying ultimately he is responsible, doesn't sound like an excuse to me.

At least he don't beat around the bush, try to make it sound positive. I've complained about this defense but I'm more willing to give him another chance than a guy who thinks we are champions of life.

As opposed to Butch, who would never say the buck stops with him.

I tried to give the defense a pass based on injuries and turnover ratio but the last two weeks has killed any enthusiasm for doing so.

This defense is fundamentally flawed in scheme for the personnel they have to work with and terrible at the fundamentals.

I think Shoop spent too much time asking back up players to do too much instead of sticking with fundamentals and the position coaches have regressed in teaching things like tackling and pass defense.

Barely any DTs, banged up LB corps and the 11th different secondary starting in 12 games? I knew it was bad but its even worse than I thought.

But I know what some will say, injuries dont matter. I have a feeling I have unfairly judged Shoop. Wow.

Barely any DT's? We have one true capable DT. The others playing now are either converted DE's or guys simply not ready to play SEC level football. Injuries...and kicking DT's off the team have killed us. This is being exposed. We are getting blown off the line.

I doubt Bob Shoop just forgot everything he knows about football this season. New system and loaded with injuries...that is why people are crying the blues.

I agree the miss tackling is inexcusable, but several of those players wouldn't even be in the game normally.
