Seth Price breaks down the last 10 seconds

Another thing that set us up for a victory was when Georgia was penalized for a false start right before their touchdown. Georgia called a timeout which negated a 10 second run-off. (Tennessee declined it anyways) If they had no timeouts, we could have elected to punish them with a 10 second run-off. Instead of 19 seconds, they would have only had 9. Now, if they run the same play and score, then we would have no chance for a hail mary. We would have to rely on a miraculous KO return. But hindsight is 20-20. We probably would have called a different prevent and they may have called a different play. No one will ever know. What gets me is how uninformed Verne and Gary are about the rulebook. They mentioned something about the run-off, and were like "Instead of 30 to 40 seconds, there's only 19" or something like that. Dumbest comment I've ever heard announcers say.

It actually was not a dumb comment. They were referring to the fact that Smart did not call time out after the Vols first down run during their next to last possession when we ran it three times and punted.

If Smart had called a TO on first down, GA would have had an extra 35 to 40 seconds at the end of the game. No timeout but 35 to 40 more seconds. So instead of 19 seconds there could have been 54 seconds minus 10 second penalty for 44 seconds. So there comment was not dumb at all. Smart really messed up.

You are correct. Sorry. I just watched the 2:10 mark in the 4th quarter and they mentioned that. Lol. I was wondering what the hell they were talking about with an extra 35 to 40 seconds. I thought they were making stuff up. Good call. (not by Smart)

Appreciate you posting this. Explains what I didn't understand. Another good bit of coaching from Butch and staff this year. Jones certainly gave us a decided coaching edge vs Smart on Saturday.

Great article again by Seth. Highley recommend his book, too.

This is why football is a great spectator sport. You can enjoy it if you know practically nothing but who has the ball and where the goal line is... but the more you can learn--from individual technique to grand strategy--just makes the game that much more interesting.

Bruised, thanks for your support of Seth. I know he appreciates everyone who has bought his book and follows him at Fox Sports and Twitter. He loves the Vols and loves writing about the strategy of the game. I do not see him often, but we text a few times each week and I know he appreciates everyone's support.

So, there was another video breakdown of the play, I think by Barton Simmons at 247, that was very similar to Seth's analysis with one rather large exception. Seth says that the intended receiver was Croom, but Jennings came up because the throw was slightly short. Simmons said that Jennings was the intended receiver, and Croom's actual role was to box out the UGA defenders (especially Carter) in order to leave Jennings with at worst a 2 on 1 matchup against smaller UGA defenders.

Looking at it several times, it does appear to my untrained eye that Croom makes more of a box out move than a play on the ball, which just adds an additional layer of depth to the coaching strategery involved in the play. What do you guys think?

In Azzani's interview yesterday he confirmed that Jennings was indeed supposed to be the back man and Croom the jumper. He said that if they get caught up and cross paths that they are supposed to switch responsibilities. He also said something along the lines of, "I'm not sure it really mattered though. He was gonna go up and make a play regardless"
