Seth Price breaks down the last 10 seconds

The kick return being practiced for three years and finally there is this opportunity to use it is amazing to me. There were probably kids wondering why the hell they work on that every week. There can't be any more doubts on that team after that though. Jones totally stumped Smart on that play and it put us in a great position to win.

When I saw how Tennessee lined up for the kickoff, I'll admit that my first thought was "oh crap, Butch had a mini-stroke and thinks we still have the lead and is preparing for an on-side kick!".

Now it all makes sense. That is actually brilliant - whoever came up with that alignment, either Butch, his staff, or another coach out there that they copied from - it doesn't matter, because that was really good. I actually can't come up with a great idea that Georgia should have done instead of what they did do. Like Seth said, if they tried to squib it, Tennessee could have knocked it down, trapped it, caught it, etc. right there at the 40 or so with no time going off the clock. So it forced them to either do what they did, or try to execute a perfectly placed pooch or something that Berry couldn't get to in the air. If it does out of bounds, I think we would have gotten it at the 50, so that would have been a no-no too.

The only thing I can think of would be to kick it as far as possible but make sure it hits out of bounds. That would give us the ball on the 35 right? Still would have been enough time to run a play to get into field goal range. I think they did the right thing but Berry would not be denied doing just enough to get us a chance

I like the view, at the goal line of the receivers from the back of the endzone, just before Jennings leaps where the Georgia defenders were "impeded" just enough by Smith & Croom to give Jennings space in the air. It's great in slo-mo.

The penalty probably carried over so an out of bounds kick puts it at the 50 not the 35. It was suggested above and seems right.

Man, I don't know if I'll ever be tired of watching that video! Between that game and the Florida come back I'm so freaking happy!! :D

I guess I am not too clear on the kick out of bounds penalty. I could see them being called for offsides and moving it up to the 40 but the celebration penalty was applied before the kick. So I'm not sure where the 50 is coming from. I thought if you kicked out of bounds inside the 35 it was simply spotted at the 35.

I could certainly be wrong though. If anyone can clear that up for me I would appreciate it. Thanks!

Would have been interesting if there were two penalties on the kick-off. The 50 is coming from the fact that they kicked off from their 20 and not their 35.

Woulda been the 50 w the previous penalty. We could have ran 2 plays from their, one probably a FG if possible. Glad it went this route.

Thanks guys. I didn't realize that the line you kick off from and the "Out of bounds spot line" (for lack of a better word) moved together in the case of a penalty. :good!:

I believe the rule is 30yds from where the ball was kicked.

Here's the rule from the NCAA book:

ARTICLE 1. A free kick out of bounds between the goal lines untouched by an inbounds player of Team B is a foul.
PENALTY—Live-ball foul. Five yards from the previous spot; or five yards from the spot where the subsequent dead ball belongs to Team B; or the receiving team may put the ball in play 30 yards beyond Team A’s restraining line at the hash mark [S19].

I bolded the element that would have applied Saturday. Putting the ball in play 30 yards from Georgia's "restraining line" (the line from which they kicked off) is what would've set the ball at the 50.

When did UGA move to Alpharetta?

Yeah, he took a bit of license with that one.

If you take the perspective that Athens is an outlier of Atlanta (some do, some don't, it's about 45 miles out...further than Murfreesboro is from Nashville), then it works. Because Alpharetta is definitely a bedroom community of Atlanta. Therefore, Josh Dobbs' home town could be said to be Atlanta (more specifically, Alpharetta).

If he want to state that Dobbs is from the Atlanta-Athens-Clarke County-Sandy Springs, GA Combined Statistical Area, then I'm okay with it.

Oh. And I'd laugh at anyone from Murfreesboro who claims to be from Nashville.

Funny, I remember the cbs announcer questioning UT's lineup, saying it was all wrong.

Carter was out of position either by his own mistake or by a coaching mistake.

What this article does a GREAT job of is reporting the depth of coaching it took to win this game. The practices for years on a play not used all that time finally paid off and will sink into young men's heads on 120 how practicing what appears to be monotonous can pay off big when the time comes. Hats off to Butch and staff for being prepared, calling the plays they did even when a lot of lay people did not understand our return alignment, and then executing. How bout them Vols and how bout them Vol coaches with their Xs, Os, Jimmies and Joes???????? GBO!!
