Seeing our LBs play so far...

I think him or Moody (if he comes) could definitely start. I can't see Reveiz starting at MLB when it comes down to it...

Guys, we won't have a starting freshman at LB at anytime this season. We have too many kids with SEC experience who understand more of the defense that what these kids will. They will compete for playing time, but not starting.

Lathers doesn't have any "SEC experience" though. It sounded like you said that was the main reason that the true freshmen wouldn't be starting...

I just think the best players will start, regardless of experience...

The best players will play, but game management is part of that though and will be factored in. You have to have the players out there that are the best AND give you the best chance to make the fewest mistakes. That's one reason they keep score with the defense so they can see those game changers and also who is going to be around the pile most of the time. We won't see a starting true freshman LB this year, but they have a great chance at playing a lot. I think we are going to have a great depth chart at LB going into Fall practice. We will see where they (true freshman) fit in come fall practice.

If it is going to come down between Lathers and Reveiz I am hoping that Lathers wins the job. Since I was a linebacker in my football days I watched the linebackers alot yesterday. Reveiz was consistently over running plays, and lets be honest he is too short and too slow. He is not zach thomas, he does not have that incredible instinct for the ball. I saw Lathers make a few good plays in the open field, and looks to be a much better presence in the middle. Another backer who looked really good was savion frazier, if rico mccoy could play middle linebacker having him, frazier and thompson on the outsides would be a pretty good line up. As it is though I would like to see either frazier or thompson at one outside spot along with mccoy then lathers or possibly a freshman at the middle spot. Askew would really have to grasp the defense well and come in physically in shape and strong but it is not impossible for a freshman to start. As I said earlier reveiz seems to be a liability in the middle and IMO the staff should go in a different direction. I know he has alot of heart and is very strong but he is not going to be the best middle linebacker we have at that position.

Being a gifted athlete is only part of the equation. If you don't know what you are doing out there you are borderline worthless. You got to have it between the ears as well. So IF Ashew can grasp the system and understand it to the point that he will not be hesitant durring snaps he will have a great chance otherwise he will be on the bench

Take it for what it's worth but the coaches spoke highly of Reveiz. Part of it is his ability to captain the ship and make sure everything is set on D. He may be slower than most but he's bull strong and smart.

Yes it was vanilla, but our linebacker's inability to get off of blocks is going to put a lot of pressure on our front four and secondary this year whether we like it or not. This team needs more speed.
