Secondary question

The pass rush has been nonexistent. You could probably count on one hand the number of sacks the DL has gotten without the aid of a blitz.

Add to that the fact that these younger DBs aren't very good man to man coverage guys. That keeps you from having the seeds to call a lot of blitzes. So the DC is damned if he does, damned if he don't. HE can't pressure the QB with four, and he can't blitz for fear of getting burned.

If there is one spot where this team is desperate for JUCO type, field ready players, its DL. Maybe the one-time transfer will help that too. They need a couple of alphas out there with attitude.

add this with how horrific #22 is.....and disaster.

Agreed! 22 is WAY too slow to play Safety. They should move him to LB and put some weight on him. He's definitely a "Box" player. He actually reminds me of Landon Collins. Collins is a box guy and is much better in run support than coverage. 22 seems to fit that bill. He's a good tackler.

We are very weak at star/nickel and safety. It was evidenced on the 3rd and 12 where our nickel lined up a yard and half inside the slot receiver with man coverage and our guy got beat to the inside. It was very bad. Pruitt was pretty pissed about it in the post-game presser. Apparently it happened more than once.

I'd like to add my input.

The secondary sucks because the fans are mad that the team sucks.

Thanks for listening.

A lot of our issues (I.e. over the middle) has to do with linebacker coverage . . . or lack thereof. The deeper routes seem to be an combination of slow pass rush and safety play recognition.
Not to mention trying to compensate for lack of coverage in the shallow routes by our linebackers//due to ****** pass rush

The defensive line was my biggest concern going into this season.

Asking a honest question here for those that understand the secondary. Why are we giving up so many pass plays? I thought our DBs and safeties were suppose to be pretty good. Is it because we play alot of zone? I just see us giving up a ton of pass yards and everyone here seems to think we have pretty good players.

It’s a couple of things..we’re getting little to no pass rush and unfortunately our LB’s are horrible in pass coverage. I swear Florida seemed to run the same play over and over and we could t or didn’t do sh$t about it

I agree that our linebackers have missed some assignments on coverage, but I actually think that's not our worst issue.

We mostly play either man-to-man or man free (man free is when at least one safety isn't playing m2m and they are playing over the top help with a corner or nickle that is playing man.

The safety play (when we're in man free) has been horrendous this season. Play over the top, read the QB, and make a break on the ball. McCollough seems like he has slow hips, Flowers is a pretty good tackler, but I haven't saw a playmaker at safety this season. I thought Key Lawrence would have made somewhat of an impact this season at some point.

The coaches need to recruit some juco talent/speed. We are way too slow! We line up 10 yds off the line of scrimmage to compensate for our slowness in the backfield. This opens us up for slants, drags, you name it. Our slowness off the line almost guarantees no sacks or pressure which further hurts our D. Again, we need speed...speed at just about every defensive position.

Virtually no pass rush will make any team give up some passing yards.

exactly...we have a couple of freshmen just starting to play (Baron, Thomas and Bailey) but need to hold on to Brooks and Evans in this upcoming class because it looks like most our other DL are seniors and don’t know how many will be back next year.

Every part of the D has to be strong - not getting a consistent pass rush will kill a good secondary; not being able to play press coverage will destroy your blitz schemes...

Mel Blount and Deion Sanders would struggle with no pressure from our DTs and OLBs, Can’t be expected to cover effectively after 3.5 seconds

If your'e still interested.
Go look up the other pass defenses in the conference "stat wise".

Look it up and ours. And tell everybody what you find.

Primetime would excel into today's game.
These kids today don't have the confidence to turn and look for the ball. Deion had so much confidence in his make up speed that he would just bait QBs all day long.

He would win the Heisman in today's game.

A lot of is just coaching too. There is some awful secondary coaching going around the game as a whole.

It all starts at the same place doesn’t it? Competition. On the other side of the ball, I don’t see a guy that makes a difference, that’s who they practice against when they can actually practice, right?

If this group are great recruiters...it isn’t showing up in the games thus far, a play every now and again...we can’t tackle, we can’t cover, we can’t get a rush going...and, this is the real killer, we can’t get lined up.

Absolute zero pass rush

Most everyone that has posted a comment in this thread is correct. It is a large combination of things creating the undeniable genius of our pass defense. Let me add to it all by saying, I thing a HUGE part of the problem as well, is our lack of being aggressively physical on the line of scrimmage with the WR/TE. Couple that with the lack of linebackers being able to cover the RB out of the backfield, I'm surprised that our D ever gets off the field. I'm glad we hired a defensive minded individual or we would really suck!

yeah the Vowels could be 2-6 and that would be a disaster, wouldn’t it?

Our pass rush for the most part is not at SEC levels of play. You simply cannot give great WRs & QBs like our prime competitors have 5 to 10 seconds to run all over the field to get open. They WILL get open. We did a decent job against UF recently in the secondary but they hurt us when Trask and his great WRs were allowed to pick us apart on their scoring plays.
