I put this in another thread... It was suggested I give it it's own thread.

So...

TFPs Wes Rucker got an SEC response on why Spurrier was not slapped around for his Kiffin comment...

KNOXVILLE — I just got off the phone with Southeastern Conference spokesperson Charles Bloom, and he explained the league’s decision to not issue a reprimand for South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier’s comments questioning Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin’s recruiting ethics.
Kiffin, as I’m sure most have heard by this point, was reprimanded today by SEC commissioner Mike Slive for violating the league’s “code of ethics.” Kiffin claimed Florida coach Urban Meyer “cheated” by illegally contacting prospect (and eventual UT signee) Nu’Keese Richardson during his official visit to Knoxville.
That wasn’t actually a violation, though, and Kiffin offered the apology Foley requested this afternoon.
“Looking at both statements from the two coaches, we felt that Coach Spurrier’s comments did not rise to the level that Coach Kiffin’s did,” Bloom said.
Bloom added that he wasn’t aware of any UT official calling the SEC to complain about Spurrier’s comments, and several UT officials backed that claim.

because he's Spurrier and we expect it but this new guy took us by surprise. That's what I got out of it anyway

Same thing still. In that case, Kiffin should continue the smack that way Fooley can expect it.

This won't be the last time something like this happens before September. I think to a degree, CLK has a certain amount of latitude to serve notice to the powers that be in the SEC. I think a loss to UF in the fall would not make him much more circumspect. The guy expects to win his fair share of the contests with his rivals.

I allow myself two more nanosmidgens of hope.

So basically Urban Meyer whined to the SEC like a little girl and in order to stop his sniveling the SEC made a statement, where as Lane Kiffin simply choose to just ignore Spurrier

I'm sure if UT cried like a little bi!@h to the SEC we may have gotten similar results and spurrier may have been reprimanded. However, us tough southerners don't cry when someone calls us names, we leave that to those who are soft and cant stand up for themselves. Since I have moved to Florida I know how soft the natives can be... For instance, if the temp. drops below 50 degrees no one goes out, its pretty lame. True story.

I am just curious why does adh have to complain to get a reaction from the sec? The rules are the rules. I think "slime" needs to be proactive with the rules and not be intimidated by fooly, imo. This whole situation is total bs.

Totally subjective by the commissioner. To me, they are one in the same. Guess the commissioner wins.

While I'm pretty much an "anything goes" guy when it comes to what people say, the obvious difference between Spurrier's comments, and Kiffen's comments, is that Spurrier went to the brink of an allegation, but didn't cross the fine line:

“I know when I was hired, after the press conference I took the test to qualify you to be a recruiter. I hadn’t taken it in three or four years. At that time I could start making calls. I don’t know if he was permitted to make that call or not. You’ll have to ask somebody else.”

He stopped short of making an allegation.

On the other hand, Kiffen made an accusation:

"I'm gonna turn Florida in right here in front of you ... I love the fact that Urban had to cheat and still didn't get him."

If that difference is hard to see, think of it this way: Meyer could actually win a court case for defamation of character (slander) for the unfounded comments that Kiffen made. Contrast that with Spurrier's comments, which alluded to the possibility of a violation, but taken literally he was just questioning how Kiffen could have taken the test so quickly. Legally, there would be no case.

no way CUM wants to get in a case over character.

"Your honor, the defense calls Jevan Sneed to the stand."

I wasn't saying that Meyer would have any interest in making a case of it (heck, Meyer wasn't the one who made a deal out of this, it was Foley, UF's AD).

I was using that to help illustrate the difference in the comments that Spurrier made, and the allegation that Kiffen made.

It was actually Jeremy Foley that complained to the SEC. Mike Hamilton, on the other hand, told Lane before his introduction as HC to talk some smack about UF. Nice to see our AD and HC on the same page.:)
