Get used to seeing Tennessee football team, unit, coach, and player rankings in the middle of the pack. There are a lot of question marks about this team. This way, if the Vols end up in the top five, they will be listed as a “pleasant surprise”. If they fall into the bottom third, it will be “we warned you“.

It’s all Clickbait at this point anyway.

At one time Golding was considered best but he just keeps sliding down the list

Gambling defense using a speedy safety or other DB to harass the QB depending on the look of the offense. We might have a Ronnie Lott type who can defend the pass, or QB rush when needed, hit like a Cape Buffalo or Gaur.

1-3 seems pretty accurate, but 5-8 could honestly be swapped around in any order and you’d have a valid argument.

Fact is we’re not gonna get the benefit of the doubt on lists like this until we’re more consistently competing for a playoff spot

He's just making a point. A valid one. UT did not beat an FBS team with a winning record in 2025. That's a serious point of concern moving forward.

I think he's reacting to those here who thought everything was okay last year, when to any reasonable observer...it was not.

UT has made changes in an effort to address that issue. But the SEC is tougher now than it was then. And there remain question marks about how all of these new pieces will work together.

Yes, there's such a thing as beating the drum too long, or too loudly...but you are what your record says you are, and right now UT is coming off an 8-5 season where (see above).

In any event, he's not wrong.

Gives the "experts" time to stir up venom in off season w/ blind dart throwing, so they have time enough to jump on bandwagons when the garbage article they put out in July is long forgotten.

I will say, we're sitting in spot where improvement w/ D and serviceable QB will put us middle of the pack. If the S&C coach is as legit as they say, and our D is back on the rails, laws of probability w/ JH offense being middle of the pack, at worst, with even the slightest of over performing on D and QB could put us in top 4-5 teams in SEC and in the hunt. We have good collective two deep talent on the roster, with strength on OL, WR and LB, so if we get everyone playing for the T on the helmet, we could really surprise some folks...am OK being ignored. Fact of the matter is we're just unproven @ QB.

Will he cut off part of his finger to play the second half? That’s one bad man that would do that.

honestly the rankings don’t matter to me right now. He has a chance to prove it in a few months.

I mean he hasn't been "on the clock" yet for UT.

By all rights, he should be last-or at least somewhere at the end of the list-amongst the other DCs who have not yet coached down 1 at their current teams.

We will begin to find out in about 8-9 weeks when the real season starts vs GT.

I am curious what the plan is from Heupel. Bringing Knowles in implies he wants a lockdown D. My concern here is this-our offense just flat out sucks when we slow down. Has been that way since gane 1 with Heupel.

We slow things down to give the defense a rest and 9 times outta 10 we snag a 3 and out for our troubles-and usually a few bad play calls amongst those 3.

Knowles players this season will, for the most part, be returning players so IMO how good his D is will be determined on how well these players can play his way. He may be limited to how much of his D he can use or, hopefully, he can throw the entire playbook at teams.

From what I have been reading the D is not lacking in talent so I believe Knowles will use that talent to fit what they can do best. Lets hope its good enough. As other posters have said, whatever he does it's got to be better than last yrs D.

I get that but we all know it by now. The mentality of having to somehow work that tidbit into every thread gets old.
