Athlon put out their anonymous quotes from conference coaches again. I didn't see this anywhere else so please merge if a repeat.

I wonder if they let a coach gossip about their own team? I have my Butch quote picked out.

https://athlonsports.com/college-football/sec-coaches-talk-anonymously-about-conference-foes-2017
“That’s an interesting deal. I don’t think anybody outside of the building can speak to what’s going on inside, but there’s obviously some turmoil."

"That’s a talented team that should win more games than it does."

"Nobody knows who their quarterback is going to be. The (Jarrett) Guarantano kid physically, I think, can do it. I haven’t seen him play in person, but he’s got the physical tools."

"My question is, what are they trying to be on offense? I really don’t know. (Offensive coordinator) Larry Scott was at Miami under Al Golden, so will they be more pro style, or are they still going to be in the gun? A lot of questions on that."

"They lose Josh Malone, and that kid was special; just really, really good even though they didn’t have a quarterback who could throw him the ball consistently."

"I don’t know how they’ll be on defense. As everybody over there got hurt, they got really bad, and you can sit there and say it’s the coaches’ fault, but when you’re playing with second- and third-stringers in our league you’ll get gashed, especially on the back end. Vanderbilt hung (45) on them and it’s not like Tennessee doesn’t know what they’re doing"

"They lose Cam Sutton, who is a really good player, but the safety Nigel Warrior is going to get a lot of buzz and it’s well deserved."

"Their linebackers are really bad relative to the rest of the division, so it’ll be interesting to see if that gets exposed."

"They’ll be salty up front if they can find somebody to replace Derek Barnett’s production.”

That linebacker quote stood out to me.

If haven't felt the same optimism as many here about that position.

I hope to be wrong, along with this anonymous coach.

I can see Saban saying this and wylo, fade and KB telling him he's full of chit and doesn't know what he's talking about.

Article could be titled "VN talks UT"

Or

"NegaVols talk UT"

And it would've had the same list of stuff.

SEC coaches hate UT?

I may get scolded for this and I know he is a very good recruiter but I think Thigpen get's replaced after this season for this very reason.

You're not wrong. Injuries and unforeseen circumstances have destroyed the LB corps year after year, yet in recruiting we are taking the minimum amount (and then converting some to DE and some Safeties to LB). No one doubts his ability to recruit well - that's not in question - but there are some legitimate concerns over his abilities as a coach. I too think they'll be addressed on the field this season, but at the same time I feel like the blame, if there is any, should fall squarely on Jones for not recruiting enough LBs. That's been a major oversight on his part over the last few years.

Thig is on the hot seat. We have been hurt by injuries and development not going well. It just about like Mahoney and the oline. You can say injuries limited Thigs opportunity to coach them up but you can also point to players that should be doing better. We are recruiting well at almost every position for 2018 but LB.

I'm honestly starting to view this as a way for coaches and administrators to secretly trash talk their rivals. I've noticed that Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee all have the worst things said about them, while some of the weaker programs have mostly positive things said about them.

I do agree, however, that Linebackers are the biggest concern on defense. It does seem like our injured guys are taking longer than expected to recover, which is potentially bad. We have more depth and experience this year than last, so hopefully that can compensate somewhat, but I definitely have more concerns about LBs than our D-line (even w/ losing Barnett, we still have a lot of great D-linemen) or secondary (we are absolutely loaded there!).

I don't know that "year after year" is accurate. Just last season. But you are right --- our depth should have never been that thin at LB to begin with. Is that on Thig or is that on Butch?

We've had some very good LBs in JRM and Kirkland so I don't know that Thig is a bad coach. Then, he's coached up guys like Colton Jumper. It's just the lack of depth that has stung us. Then again, we've seen disappointing progress on some other LBs. Hopefully guys like Quarte Sapp and Daniel Bituli step up soon.

Weak play at LB is not new. It's been pretty steady under Jones. I am convinced he has decided to recruit based on *'s rather than looking at the needs. Perhaps that's some of the secret analytics he's addicted to.

Saban wouldn't say that. First off, if it were him, he's just plug in another kid or two and you wouldn't notice the difference.

And if another coach were being honest, he'd have said, "how the hell did Tennessee give up 600+ yards and 45 points to Vandy's awful offense? I know they were down to 2nd and 3rd stringers, but come on.....they've been top 10-15 in recruiting, while Vandy's been top 50-60".

But instead its actual coaches that tend to know what they are talking about so......

That's right, lol. So not only are VN posters negavols, all the other SEC coaches are negavols too who just hate them some Butch. Don't they realize that Dooley was our coach 6 seasons ago?

When are coaches are saying they see Colton Jumper as a starter I'm not sure how anyone could be surprised about the linebacker quote.

That's pretty much what he did say. He just showed a little respect for Tennessee.

Indeed we've had some good ones, but we've also had the number / depth issue you speak of and IMO that reflects on the H.C.'s attention to detail.

I really hope the practice reports are true and we've improved there. At the very least, having experience and depth returning will be huge. Looking forward to seeing watch Butch does this year with recruiting. I think he's got a couple LBs in mind - I just hope we don't skimp on them again. Speaking of the devil

We just landed 2018 linebacker Matthew Flint

GO BIG ORANGE!

Curt Maggit, AJ Johnson, Jalen Reeves Maybin, Darrin Kirkland jr.

I wouldn't call those guys weak really. Injury prone. But not necessarily weak.
