Scroggins Aftermath

Hard to have faith when 4 QB prospects tell you, "No thanks." Looks like its JUCO-U for us for a while. I'm not down on the Vols. I just need to realize and accept that we're now a bottom 6 team in the SEC for the next 2-3 years... we need to face that reality.

Forget Brunetti. He's wrong for our system. He can't even see over our OLINE.

Oh well... start setting our sights on 2011 for a QB. It hurts to even ponder that right now.

I seem to remember a JUCO QB by the name of Josh Huepel....didn't he do something for OU?

Sarcasm gentlemen, heard of it? Seriously, I have no problem with his choice. If this kid was from Knoxville and picked USC to get play time, we would crucify him for life. My point was nobody knows how well Barkley will do, but many act like he is guaranteed for greatness, Just like Heath and Leaf were destined for NFL greatness. If Scroggins thinks he has a shot at the starting job, who can say he doesn't. He has the physical tools and obviously doesn't mind the competition, so good luck to him.
Seriously, we should be happy we were in the discussion with USC and Fla after last year's performance and a new coach( not to mention questionable O line.)

I agree with most of your post except this. If we had a player with even 75% of the talent/ potential that Barkley had, no one would care if JS went to USC.

Guys if things don't go our way today, I dont think all hope is lost. A variety of things could happen, including finding a gem in the upcoming high school season, or even Lamaison stepping up.

However, I thought that Nick Stephens was the best pure passer on our squad last year. Now, that's not saying much, but after his first game performance people were willing to crown him. Supposedly during the offseason he has become a monster in the weightroom, putting on 10-15 lbs of muscle and breaking all the UT strength records for QBs.

So don't panic, we're going to have to prove we can coach our guys up to attract "PTPers".
Good post. Lamaison and/or Newton can give you enough depth to get by on. It's time for CLK and staff to get at least one of those guys on board. It's also time for CLK and staff to prove they can coach up your QBs and have them show marked improvement in 2009 vs 2008. If those two things are done well then UT should be able to land at least one top notch QB prospect as well as a solid "backup level" QB prospect fairly early on for UT's 2011 class. No need to feel like the sky is falling -- UT is really not in that bad of a situation. JMHO.

By most accounts, Lamiason will be at UT this fall (w/in a couple of weeks).

That's been my understanding. I think he'll prove to be a an excellent pickup for UT. IMO, it's a very good recruiting move to bring him in.

We do not need any quarterbacks or any other players that don't want us. Kiffin and company will find a good one that does bleed Orange mark my words. We are going to be OK, trust.

The main reason I wanted Scroggins is to attract other recruits. LSU, Bama, Florida, and even Georgia have huge momentum. It just felt like we needed a "boost" to make some progress and catch up with them. Really, I want Chase Rettig. Who can blame Scroggins for wanting to play for the best program, when they are in his back yard, and he grew up a fan. Wouldn't you rather ride the pine for the Vols, and maybe get a chance one day, than play for like a Nebraska?

Plus, I will be very dissapointed if the staff isn't able to convert Rettig. Come on, Boston College??

It does help recruiting to have a touted QB prospect committed, but it is not a prerequisite to landing good players at other positions. From that standpoint, it would have boosted momentum somewhat to get Scroggins, but just because LSU, UF, UGA and UA are filling most of of their spots sooner than UT does not mean UT won't make up most of that ground later. Look at how strong UT finished recruiting with its 2009 class, after a pretty dismal season and with a coaching change. UT's 2010 class is off to a good start, especially on the defensive side. I see no reason to think UT won't finish well in recruiting this time too. These HS kids haven't even played their senior seasons yet. There are plenty of good prospects on your board and plenty more that have yet to fully emerge. It's a long time yet until NSD. Y'all shouldn't worry so much.

The problem with bringing up Juco QB's as an example is that there are very few of them to point to. Andre Ware, Warren Moon, McNair could be considered juco type since he played at Alcorn State, -- that's 4. Maybe a few others out there, but really scarce over the years. Juco is not only less traveled but full of pot holes!
