Sure sounds silly to me. I guess any belief can sound that way. Tom Cruise has his little girl do scientology play dates. She can only eat herbs also and NO happy meal.:crazy:thoughts

Any doctrine that makes you pay to be "enlightened" to the truths about our existence is a fraud. It is nothing more than a tax loophole for players in the movie business. Tom Cruise can admonish somebody for taking prescription drugs but he totally ignores his own botox and plastic surgeries? What a joke!

To each their own. Following an actor's religious, political, or social philosophy would be a huge mistake. I think Maverick is a total nut, but he makes a great wingman!

kinda like tithing?

You can't compare the two. When you tithe enough you are not offered some "mystical truth" that is kept hidden from the rest of the congregation. Come on PJ you know that logic doesn't pan out. You usually have witty and valid comments but this one was way off.

it was a joke but there is some similarity. Not a "mystical truth" but you are offered the chance to watch your preacher on a 100" plasma screen. :) (seen it too many times)

When Tithing, you are doing so in faith not because you expect but because you are thankful for his blessings not because God won't love you if you do not.

in theory, not always in practice. Televangelists are a great example

I wasn't sure if you were joking or not. I have that same problem every once in a while myself.

donating to a televangelist and tithing are two completely different things.

I realize that but they both still remind me of the 30yo disabled Vietnam vet on the corner asking for money.

PJ, I have said it before but you are pretty sharp most of the time, Televangelists begging for your money and tithing to a church that loves you, prays for you, care for you and your family, and contantly gives you encouragement and solid teachings of the word and life lessons, a support group, and have become as close as family are two different things. I tithe to further the Kingdom of God because he has blessed me in every aspect of my life and I have the faith to know that this will continue. What is so cool to me is the fact that I fail as much if not more as the next guy but I am still welcomed and have a peace over my life that I didn't know at all through until the age of 25, wow sorry there didn't mean to sound as though I was preaching........now send me your money......lol:eek:k:

It is highly encouraged, yet in no way required. However, Islam, Catholicism, Anglicanism, and various other Protestant sects all believe that tithing is a duty of the faithful...

I'm pretty sure somewhere in the Bible, it says you need to tithe. NEED

II Corinthians 9:6-9

Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under complusion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. As it is written:
He has scattered abroad his gifts to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.
