I am excited to see how our pressure will be dialed up against WV. This is the key to the game imo. But here’s the question. Do we have the talent to consistently create a pressure with our front 4 (or 3)? Or will we have to scheme up some blitzing more often than not to create pressure. I know we are going to get 1-2 turnovers, I’m trying to figure out how.

I don’t care how well our secondary is coached, if we can’t create some type of pressure, we are screwed.

Now when I say pressure, I don’t mean sacks although they are welcomed. Pressure by getting in the qb’s face and collapsing the pocket. If dbs see that consistent pressure, they may just very well have the confidence to be sitting on routes and in great position for some ints. Former Titan Blaine Bishop hit on these points Im making today on 3HL. He said when he had that line in 98-99 with Jevon Kearse and co, he didn’t even have to back peddle on some plays.

Just remember, Grier’s strength is his quick decision-making and ridiculously quick release. He’s also a pretty good ad-libber as a scrambler. Blitzing without covering really good could lead to huge numbers for this guy.

Can’t say for sure, but Pruitt was known at Bama for liking to bring more heat than Kirby did before him.

Hard to tell if he’ll have as much faith in our guys on the backend to blitz a whole lot, though. I’m really looking to seeing for myself this weekend!

Gonna be hard to get alot of Pressure on Grier.He takes alot of 3 step drops

I don't think we can sit back. I expect a pretty aggressive game plan on defense. We'll probably have to live with giving up some big plays in order to apply pressure and put ourselves in position to make some big plays of our own, be it big 3rd downs or creating turnovers...

I suspect on obvious pass downs Pruitt will test Grier and these blockers with with a few different blitz packages to see if they can pick it up.

What I'm looking for is can we contain the run first, so we can get them in obvious pass situations. Now, and this is the second big key ( it's also why cjp has been working with the dbs so much imo ), can we cover well enough to allow our 4 man rush to get pressure ( or 3, letting the 4th spy Grier instead of rush ).

Also, do we have a Derek Barnett type pass rusher on this team? I doubt it but we will see. If we do, WVU will be as surprised as us and it will cost them a drive or two before they adjust and start chipping that guy with a te or back. Do we have a couple really good pass rushers? We don't know. But, if we do, scoring tds could become a major pain for WVU. I suspect we don't have any really good pass rushers, so we gotta be able to cover long enough for our 3 and 4 man rush to get that pressure.

Number 1 key, and it always is, contain the run. Number 2 key, disrupt the pass game with good coverage, or blitz packages, or unleash a very talented pass rusher or two.

Finally, don't be scared to mix in some zone, be run gap sound, let them catch some easy ones in front of you, then hit hard, gang tackle and go for strips. Let's use zone some to force wvu to have to march the field without penalties, drops, and to's.

Offensively, dear lord I hope we can run the ball well, and use play action. Running game and PA are a QBs friends. In obvious pass downs, we gotta block, pick up blitzes, and jg gotta make good reads. He has to feel pressure and move in the pocket/escape and make plays

I see different with the bolded. It all starts up front imo. I see it as, can our front create enough pressure to allow better coverage for our secondary.

I'm with you on this and it's a major gamble I'll admit but we have to impact his timing somehow. Another thing to consider is that Grier has the greenlight to change into any play at LOS so I don't really know how well UT will be at disguising our defense. It is likely that UT will shift after Grier makes the call. Definitely gonna be interesting.

I addressed this with, do we have 1 or 2 really good pass rushers? If we do, great! It will disrupt their progressions and we won't have to dial up as much pressure and leave 1 on 1's all over the field.

Well there's precedents on this. The 2015 FL game we had a very aggressive game plan until the very end otherwise it probably could have worked. In 2001, we had a VERY aggressive game plan that really put a lot of emphasis on our front 7. We lived, and died, on what they did up front. That game in particular reminds me of this match up. Just like that game, on paper we couldn't match up with qb and wr's... So we went pressure heavy and it worked. Grossman still got his TD's and yards, but he paid for it. I think we hit him 30 times that night. We held Florida to around 50 yards rushing in the process.

The game was on the front 7's shoulders and the delivered.

Don't want to say it's the exact same here, but from a match up stand point there are some similarities.

Right. I’m sure play call will be fluid and flexible. If it turns into a chess match, I like our chances. Well, as long as our offense isn’t putting the d in bad situations and scoring some points.

Agree about the offense and to that point I think they will be making a concerted effort to limit as much as possible the time our defense is n the field.

If our offense can be described as"efficient" by games end, I think we'd be able to call that successful...
