5 for 5 will be firm in 2027. Very few teams if any besides LSU are going to cut players to take a few players that can’t make a NFL team and no want another payday. Teams can’t be made to pick them up. No excuses next year. And LSU isn’t going to even make the playoffs this year! Can’t wait till we meet in November! GBO
I know it's a symptom of a larger problem for the schools that being a "pro but not pro" league won't work.
Whatever issues, no matter how grotesque, all go back to the same thing: the schools want pro level control over the business, teams, and players without being a pro league and following the established legal precedents for pro leagues.
The NCAA got away with it until SCOTUS called them out and will be in hell until Congress helps them with Antitrust issues OR they turn into a pro league and follow the established pro rules.
Everything else, all the chaotic court issues, are just symptoms of the problem:
The business model of college football is illegal under Antitrust Law.
Odds that this happens and Kiffins first game back will be…wait for it…the Tennessee game.It will be interesting if Sankey pushes forward. Sankey didn't say they couldn't come. He just imposed hefty punishment for the coaches and the team if they do. I don't know how a judge can interfere with that. One of the penalties is a coach suspension for half a year.
Of course there are a few, that has been going on before NIL. But most are serious about grades. I have never denied there weren’t some that didn’t appreciate there education. But folks insinuating and blanketing all or even most aren’t going to class is patently wrong and absurd. Tge great majority do and they get a bad rap. Many of our players are legit good students and that is a fact! GBOMost guys are but there are well documented cases of guys who didn't and were stars.
Denial of that isn't even possible and I'll bet good money that if DGG DOESN'T want to emphasize education in any way, he'll still graduate, etc because schools are very, very good at making that GPA issue not a thing anymore.
I agree! GBOAgree. Cutting players to make space for players who failed in the NFL will and should make players who sign with a school in the future to think twice about said school especially if said player also loses their aid and NIL.
I don't have a problem with the 5 for 5, but the "I'm going to try out for the NFL or the NBA (etc.) and if they cut me, I'll be back" band wagon needs to stop. Players need to make the decision and stick with it verses coming back and throwing another player to the curb.
No denial there. Most guys take advantage of the entire package of school, training table, etc that comes with being an athlete.Of course there are a few, that has been going on before NIL. Physiologically speaking, the human male does not fully immature until around 22 years of age. They should all remain in high school until then. Otherwise, we might be jeopardizing their future development and possibly their existence.Meanwhile, the NFL continues to sit back and just watch as the problems its CBA/anti-trust exemptions create is borne completely by the NCAA and primarily CFP. I find it ironic that high school players need to be out of school for three years before going to the NFL partly due to physical maturity, and now there are NFL players coming back to play against those same “immature” athletes.
Your saying things I never said, your moving the goal post. All I am saying students are still by and large are still going to school as much as they ever were. It’s not NIL that is making the ones that aren’t getting an education it’s laziness abd attitude. The insinuation that most aren’t taking school seriously no more was what I was talking about and that insinuation is full of crap. I’m done I have clearly made my point. GBONo denial there. Most guys take advantage of the entire package of school, training table, etc that comes with being an athlete.
However, there's no denying a really good player doesn't have to give a crap about school to play at a major university. It's not a new thing at all.
Even the "Jr College or Community College" route for guys with lousy test scores has magically vanished for the most part.
Amazing, isn't it, that high school athletes have gotten so much smarter.![]()
Well, they have to be enrolled in school so I guess there has to be some academic activity. Most are taking their classes on line so I doubt there is much class involvement. However I’m sure their academic involvement depends on the classes they’re taking and how much “help” they are receiving. Most are not majoring in rocket science.Your saying things I never said, your moving the goal post. Most regular students aren’t either. Do you got data on what all players are taking? Or are you speculating. Eligibility has already been taken to court and the the NCAA won.I'm not sure "5 for 5" or any eligibility rules will hold if challenged. The barn door isn't just open, it seems, but it's been dragged well into the field and barn is on fire.
Eligibility has already been taken to court and the the NCAA won.
The guy that played pro basketball and tried to play for bama was told to hit the road.
The issue in this case is the players are saying the ncaa put in this rule this year and they want their 5th year. They argue they never would’ve left if the rule was in place.
NCAA should’ve came out earlier and said a one time grace period or put it in place starting 2027. 2026 falls under the old rule with red shirts and medicals.

I agree with your take, but players will try to come back when 7 figure money is to be had. That’s life changing money for these guys. Some colleges will throw out ridiculous money if they think it will help them win (Lane Kiffen).Agree. Cutting players to make space for players who failed in the NFL will and should make players who sign with a school in the future to think twice about said school especially if said player also loses their aid and NIL.

I've been on both sides of the matter in my head regarding players returning for a fifth year after being at an NFL preseason camp. I've finally settled on letting them return. Why?
Because the whole idea previously was they should not return because they lost their amateur status going to the NFL. With NIL and players collecting money both NIL and stipends from schools players no longer have an amateur status. In some cases players get more money playing in college than they do in the NFL. If youngsters are allowed to ply their trade playing sports neither the NFL nor the NCAA nor SEC should be able to legally block them from their money.
