I see a few threads here talking about the possibility of D Sampson coming back. What are you people smoking? Not my cigars, certainly.

I would be giddy and ecstatic of course but what makes you think this is even a remote possibility?

RB is such a hard position on the body and Sampson is like a railroad spike but he can only get so many years in the NFL. He needs to go get that money. I mean, what else is there left for him to prove here? He is already one of the greatest RBs in the history of TN.

Tony Basilio has mentioned that Sampson is shopping NIL options

I “think” he likely goes pro. The plan was for him to go pro if he had a good season. He had one of the best seasons ever so I would think the plan is still for him to go pro. That said if he were to come back I’m sure he would get a really good NIL pay day possibly could improve his draft position if he could cut down the fumbles. Also potentially be the first Vol in history to win a Heisman

Players don’t come back because they have something to prove. They may have goals and simply want to be with a team and teammates they love. If NIL is good and NFL potential is low then why wouldn’t he consider coming back?

Perhaps.

Selfishly, I’d love to see him back but I completely understand why he’d leave.

RBs only have so many carries in them.
Possible he can make more guaranteed money here. Idk. Usually never ends up with someone coming back that can go pro though.

RBs aren't first rounders anymore, so you need to compare 3rd or 4th round NFL rookie contracts with no guarantees to the guaranteed NIL money. I'd bet the NIL money will be comparable if not more.

I honestly think he'll be back.
I think quality running backs in the future will start going higher. Boise Running back will be and should be high first rounder. No I am talking top level special backs. I think some on the NFL are starting to realize the special ones are worth it. Derrick Henry type backs deserve 1st round money.

I honestly don’t know the answer to this…what is the difference in pay between a 3rd to 4th round pick at RB (don’t see him going any higher) vs. a NIL deal for next year?

That’s really what this comes down to right?

I think most of the discussion has been his draft ranking & potential first NFL contract vs NIL for returning. Most also say that starting the clock towards his 2nd contract is still more important than whatever gain he might get on a another year of a lucrative NIL.
If you get a second. Injury and done.

I guess there are slightly different obligations between an NFL schedule and college.

If I were advising him, one million times out of one million GO PRO. You’ve got four college games left. Take care of the ball, win the NC and get to work on your 40 time for the combine.

Anyone wanting him to stay is not looking for the best interest of the lad long term.

Sampson seems to be a well rounded individual. Life after football is a long time compared to 4 or 5 years in the NFL for a RB.
If he stays he will be revered in Tennessee. His career options would be numerous. A possible Heisman would look good on any resume. I don’t believe he would lose any money if he stayed another year.

Why, if he doesn't have as good of a season as this year then his stock hits the skids. I would like for him to return as bad as you but what would you do if you set the bar as high as he has?
