I really like sal. He was an all american, played in the NFL, has coached up alot of great players, and he has passion for the game of football.

Sunseri has to show us that our defense is atleast progressing. MSU is a solid team that we should be able to beat.

That being said this is the game to tell if he can get it done, hes had 2 weeks to prepare for a team that runs alot, with an athletic QB. i don't expect us to totally stop MSU from running the ball i just expect for the D to not make every o-line man and RB they play to look like an all american.

I see what you are getting at, and this weekend is pretty important, but Sals defining moment was two weeks ago when we manage to score 44 damn points and we still manage to lose by 7.

I would agree. We've had an extra week to prepare...if he can't get his and our defenses **** together and 1. Seal the edge and 2. Prevent the huge play then we are in serious trouble.

one of them was against akron buddy. And don't even want to remember how many points they put up against us. Then Bowling Green held them to 10 point a week ago.

Good use of buddy. Utfan is going to ride and die with Dooley and Co.

Schematically, we have been good. The players have to execute and we have had some plays where we were out of place, which have cost us. None of this should be a surprise to anyone. I definitely think its to early to be judging his skills as a coordinator.

Bowling Green also gave Florida all they wanted. Just saying.

He's a warehouse manager that to this point has had his plate full with being a store manager. Sometimes it's just time to realize that if a guy has been at a certain position (regardless of industry) for 30 years there is probably a good reason for that.

To beat a dead horse.. Sunseri has never held the DC position at a FBS/Div-1 school in his entire ~30 year career. Much less one where he was expected to install a completely new defense. College/NFL is now a field where the best quickly rise to the top. What did Dooley see in him that nobody else at any of the other schools/teams he has coached at didn't see?

He's a nice guy, I'm sure. But he is in a cut-throat and results-oriented field.

As long as we keep their skill players from running wide and free like gazelles in the secondary, we'll be ok.

I'm neither pro or con on the coaches, hate to burst your bubble. I'm also not quick to jump the gun on things. I haven't seen a thing that can't be corrected once players learn the system. Heck, Jacques was losing containment when Wilcox was here.

But, he was defensive coordinator for three years at smaller schools. What you say is correct, but just so the crowd understand that you are quantifying it with the phrase " FBS/Div-1 school"

He was thought of highly enough at Pittsburgh, that he was the interim head coach until Johnny Majors was rehired for that position. I remember that it caused a really big stink when Johnny choose not to retain Sal on that staff.

They had 229 yards passing, 49 attempts, 4.7 avg

115 yards rushing, long of 70.

Not much there says they wore us out on D. We have to limit mistakes, but again, nothing schematic. We are 5 games in with a new D. There were going to be some pains, mainly in the run, and it has showed. I'm not ready to say he can't cut it, no matter how this game goes. Year 2 of this D will be good, there have already been flashes of that.

i almost said when i started the thread that i think it will get better. But if a post is to long VN wont read it lol.
Any time you are switching to a different D there will be a learning curve.
All i am saying is that with 2 weeks to prepare we should be able to hold MSU under control. We had along time to prepare for NC ST and our Defense excited everyone. The expection is to not come out and suck it and if we do it will bring up question about sal.

Could it be we're just not that 10 win team many thought we were. Or maybe Florida, USCe, and even Georgia are better then we first thought. The Sal train was golden when he signed on now 5 games in he's a turd...

I've got a feeling "Sal's defining game" may not come until next year. Hope like he!! I'm wrong!

he needs players. the issue with the defense is what was talked about for the last year.. lack of depth and lack of talent. they have been signing DBs at a tremendous rate because they are trying to fine kdis that can play.

Hard to make a judgement on Sal until the talent level and depth reach SEC levels. UT can't even find 11 starters on D that are SEC level let alone backups.

Yeah, I think we are at least a year out before he shuts down any really good teams. Gotta to have more speed in there with the back eight. The front three are ok.

Aye, I expect the D to look a lot better this week. I just disagree'd about whether this game is his defining moment. It is too soon for me, as there has been good and bad. I just see the bad as getting better once the system is learned.

The flip side is player development.

Everybody knew the learning curve was going to be very steep for the new D. We have better players than we had last year, so at some point we need to see some pretty drastic improvement...this year.

But even in the "cutthroat" field of college football, coordinators that are charged with installing a completely new offensive and defensive scheme are rarely judged on one season.

The exception is where the whole staff gets blown out, but barring a 6-6 or worse season, that's not happening at Tennessee.

Going to a 3-4 took a full season before teams like Georgia and Auburn stopped looking like a pee-wee squad, so I expected it to do the same here. If you thought they would flip a switch an be great right away, you were completely nuts.
