I can understand following the rules but geez, talk about stiffing a tradition.

No cigar?: One of the long-standing traditions of the Alabama-UT rivalry is that the winning team celebrates its victory by passing out cigars to coaches and players.
But Tide Coach Nick Saban said that was not allowed in the locker room after the game.
"No. It's against NCAA rules to use tobacco. I don't think anybody even thought about it. The players were so happy. I know it's a tradition here but the players never came and asked me about it and I never mentioned it to them," he said.
But there were hints that the players might have secretly gotten their hands on cigars. Asked if he had received a cigar, Tide quarterback John Parker Wilson tapped the pocket of his jacket and said: "Oh, maybe."

Another example of why I like Saban so much. No respect for archaic, mindless "traditions."

Yes, I am Bama thru and thru, but this is not a troll reply. I see a lot of things with you guys that we went through for way too many years.

IMHO, the best thing Saban has done is break down some of the "old" past. He shows it respect, but moves forward in a new way.

I am pleased with what he has done with Shula's players, and the UA Nation is looking more toward 08 and mainly 09.

All I can say to you, is what a difference a "real" change makes.

The "W" is the only thing that matters in a ballgame. But always enjoyed the idea of the players having cigars after the winner of this game(when it is not Bama). I will still keep smoking my cigars when we beat Bama during my tenure on earth.

Smoking will shorten your tenure here. Ever heard of COPD or lung cancer.:p

I understand that outside of the Bama family most folks really do not realize the total cultural change going on.

Maybe read this CECIL HURT: When adversity looms, Alabama now has Nick Saban | TideSports.com

With all due respect, we understand perfectly.

No matter what Saban does in his tenure at Alabama, he will never execute the "cultural change" like Bruce Pearl did.

We need a change, but UT and Bama's situation aren't even close to one another. Bama went thru 4 coaches since their last NC? We have had the same one. It's not as easy to
"change the culture" when the culture on your sideline brought a NC to town.

No, the NC doesn't buy him forever and yes I am ready for a change, just making the point that changing the culture from scandals and constantly changing coaches is a little different than our situation.

We don't need to give the NCAA another reason to kick our teeth in. I'll take a smoke free victory locker room over a letter of inquiry any day.

coach fulmer was ready to blow the whistle on that cigar smoking yesterday, that's the only reason saban didn't allow it.:)

As many on this board have said. As bad as you hate it, as bad as you want to deny it, as bad as it makes your blood boil.

We have changed, and you have not. Yeah we screwed the pooch for a lot of years, but Bryant Jr. and other boosters are not calling shots now. Your big boosters still are.

Yes we relish seeing Phatimus Philimus going down the toilet.

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

you beat us one year and you guys have suddenly changed? you lost to georgia and florida state, not exactly tough teams to beat. you should have lost to ole miss and houston. maybe a little premature on the change call. you guys will lose 4 games this year. beating us is more evidence of our change than it is of yours.

I am not talking about the one win over you. I am talking about the total change. We knew you were a weak sister coming in. the question was, would we play 4 qtrs. We did.

I am talking about the entire UA program. Yeah, still ups and downs to come. Yes still, big time recruits to come. Julio Jones was there for his 4th straight home game.

Its ok, it isn't about this year. Besides, the money isn't a problem.

As you guys will soon find out. Your boys will dig deep also.

only difference is we'll make sure to give it to the coach and not the players
