I read that Karl has been injured. I am wondering will the linebacking corps be better without him since we have 2 or 3 lb's that are better athletes than Karl. Does this pave the way for Donald to make an immediate impact?

he is most likely going to be ready for the first game. while we may have better athletes behind him, he is a much smarter player

I second that opinion 100%. There are others behind him on the depth chart with much more talent, but he has a nose for the ball and doesn't get fooled often. Maybe outran, but not fooled.

So is that good or bad? lol ! Serious though, is it better to see the ball and get left or to get fooled on a countertrap or draw and possibly go catch the ball carrier ?

i would definitely start karl over donald or any one else on the depth chart. he is a senior and has composure

I'd have to go with a smart slow player. Karl is usually in good position to make plays.

Karl starts for a reason and thats, that he knows the defense great and he makes all the checks and reads for the front 7, and is a smart player that puts himself in the right place at the right time. Just because he isnt a 5 star rivals player doesnt mean he isnt a vital part of our defense.

Karl started because we had very little depth at linebacker. Judging soley by the front seven last year if he was in fact doing checks and reads they may want to find another man for the job. The last time I looked, a Nitanny Lion was checking and reading his way up and down the field.

Having the wrong checks and not executing are very different things. He started because the defense runs smoother when he is on the field and he puts himself in the right place at the right time. If you'd pay attention to the calls and checks that are made and understand how the defense is run then you'd know that the right calls were being made, our dline mostly were the ones that didnt execute.

I'd say Lex understands the calls, checks, and defense as well as you.

I've been following the Vols since before you were born. Thus, any Vols topic has plenty to do with me. Also, I respect Lex's opinion. I don't like to see attempts to discredit him.

Ryan Karl has an incredibly hard time shedding blocks and scraping, and he is a step slow hitting the hole. What good does it do to recognize the hole if your legs cannot get you there?

He is the perfect example of UT's talent problem. He is at the right place at the right time about 3 times a game, and is one of the reasons our safetys have to make so many tackles. If he is not in the right place, he doesn't have the talent to make up for it. He wouldn't have sniffed playing time on any of the better defensive squads that the Vols have had.

No one will accuse Karl of being the most talented. If one of these studs eventually takes his starting spot, so be it. Until then, though, we need his experience in playing in big games. And his hustle is unmatched.

I wouldn't worry about him against Cal. He was pretty dominant in that game.
