I know DS wants to run and run alot. I dont get to follow many games at all but looking at the stats I see a problem. The Vols are successfully stealing bags at less than a 66% rate. By all accounts anything less than 70% is bad baseball.

For you guys watching every game, is the running game helping or hurting? Are the Vols running at appropriate times or is it just reckless?

May be a problem with the zone blocking scheme or could be that the backs are not seeing and hitting the hole quick enough...I think it will be addressed this spring and summer

Can't tell if this is sarcasm or not, but it's still funny. I am somewhat concerned considering the level of competition so far has not been stellar. Either way, I have always thought stealing bases is based more off of personel than anything coaches can do. I know there is strategy involved with everything, but it pretty much comes down to a player that just knows how to steal bases, and having the green light to do it. CDS will recruit some more speed in here in time, we just need to relax and enjoy the ride back to relevance.

I am sure DS will recruit to his pressure style but a lot of coaches feel that stealing bases can be taught and done successfully regardless of skill set. It looks like DS is going to be in that mode. Stat wise it looks like things are very much a work in process and much improvement is needed. The Vols are attempting around 4 stolen bases a game. That is an astounding pace if they keep that up. I would assume that pace slows as the players learn some discretion.

Not a lot of data to get numbers yet. In the game I watched, I'm not sure we tried to steal but once.

I didn't get watch the game today but I am told the running game cost the Vols the game today. For you guys watching these games is the pressure game a weapon or a problem at the present?

the running game is hurting us right now. Lot's of missed signs. Lots of pick offs. Lots of runners thrown out.

I know Sabremetrics hates the stolen base and hit & Run and I think I understand why now. However, Serrano inherited a team of relatively low OBA guys and I don't think we have many contact hitters as well.

I will say this, we are seemingly forcing more balks. 2 today (1 for each team though)

Next week at UGA will be interesting. UGA is losing at home this weekend to great UCLA team and we are struggling against a good ULM team.

Thanks for the response. I would expect the aggressiveness to diminish in SEC play. Monroe is much improved and I figured this would be a tough weekend.

Had at least 3 guys picked off today, Serrano called it "atrocious".

The success rate of stolen bases is less than 60% along with a number of pick offs. By the numbers the running game is a significant problem. I will chalk it up to guys learning a new system and believe in time the Vols will be efficient in that area.

Don't disagree....I watched CSF last year, so I get where they're trying to go...they have quite a ways imo.

I started this thread to get opinions of you guys that are actually watching these games instead of looking at the stat sheet. After getting to watch tonight thanks to TV I am certain that DS must make some changes in his approach to the running game.

It is inexcusable to give up an out via a caught stealing when your team in losing 4-0 and only has 7 outs left to play with. Adjustments are going to have to be made IMO.

I did not see every out this evening as I was flipping back and forth between baseball and basketball. Based on what I've seen so far, it seems like we're getting picked off more than successfully stealing bases, of course, I'm not a stats guy, just my perception.

CDS has used the phrase "missed signals" in at least a few instances regarding the running game. Gotta fix that, and it should be fixable, right?

I have many concerns, but I'm chalking them up to trying to give guys opportunities in game situations or that they are making decisions based on practice and/or effort shown in practice. Bennett and Walker for example.

I am a big fan of a team that pushes the envelope on the bases but you have to know when to get that foot off the peddle. When down by multiple runs late in the game the stolen base is not an option IMO. Giving up that out in the 7th inning trailing 4-0 tonight was bad baseball and that isn't debatable IMO.
