Can someone who knows how to break down film effectively tell me what the problem is with our running game. It seems that we have big talented bodies at lineman, granted they are young, but they do have a few games together under their belt. Is it scheme, lack of fundamentals, or will it just take a couple of years to get that ironed out? These are serious questions, I can tell as a fan that we need to run the ball better, but don't understand what is holding us back from it.

We have a bunch of friendly gentle giants on our O-Line. Chad Clifton, Spencer Riley, and Cosey Coleman were as mean as snakes.

It's very simple. We don't move people at the point of attack. Somebody got whipped on almost every rushing attempt.

It was pointed out against Cinci that we do not make contact in the run game, we wait for contact, the running game is all about blowing the guy up in front of you and we do not do that.

i commented in another thread that against cincy on qb sneaks our o line fired off and hit or pushed but on other run plays waited for the contact to come to them.maybe we could call qb sneaks but then hand the ball to the running back,jk.our backs dont seem to be running down hill either.guess they assume there will not be a whole when they get there, idk.somethings gonna have to change or it will be a long year.

The O line does not fire off the ball to engage the D linemen. they are standing there waiting for the D line to engage them, just like it was a pass protectio play. This causes no push, no re-establishing the line of scrimmage, and subsequently no holes. I think they need to go back to zone blocking, which is often more effective when you can't generate a push at the line.

I just do not understand it, they have great size, we average what, 300lbs on the o-line? Pass blocking is ok, run blocking is just garbage. I know we are young up front but so was UF, we had 2 yards rushing, 2 yards rushing! That is plain unacceptable. Coach H needs to get in these guys butts and let them know whats what.

We cannot win in the SEC without some kind of a running game period.
O-line pride? Lets see it.

This and the fact that they are overweight, slow, easily confused (youth) and still fundamentally unsound. The footwork/leverage was awful on run blocking.

It really is fascinating how our line manages to be pretty good in pass protection but useless in the run game. Hiestand needs to earn his paycheck and get them going somehow.

I hope that it can be fixed during our off week, and implemented against Buffalo. Without Hunter(If he can't return) we have to establish a running game, our receivers are great but Hunter was our game breaker.

Thats pretty obvious. The question is why? I could see it last year with FR bodies, and inexperience. That should not be the issue it has appeared to be the first 3 games. We are adequate in pass protection, but down right horrible at run blocking.

Are they physically weak?
Poor schemes?
Soft?

To add to that, Poole looks slow and confused as to where to go.

Tenn. problem with running is that the line does not know how to zone block. To zone block every linman should block the guy in front and drive the opposing lineman backward. Maybe that by placing a wing on either side of the line with an extra tight end or fullback could also be used to gain more blockers. Again the trick to moving the football is have guys driving off the ball in unison. General Neyland was asked one time if he had every seen a perfect play in football and he said that he had not. He was then asked what he thought a perfect play would be and he responded that it would be eleven opposition players lying on the ground! An offensivie lineman demeanor has to be that you are going to drive opposing player in front of you off the line.

they run block like they pass block

Was getting ready to say the samething, the o-line looks like they are pass blocking on run plays, they stand straight up, the don't fire off the ball and push anybody, they stand up and wait for contact..

Wait, 300 lb lineman are overweight? Slow? You know they are offensive lineman right?

Guys, Dooley is doing it wrong, we need to be recruiting 180 pound lineman with 4.4 speed!

Earn his paycheck? Look, there was a reason Dooley always referred to last season as "year zero". I think some people here need a reality check. Logically thinking, just say that Dooley's first full recruiting class where he had a year to recruit guys (This year's freshman class) is his first REAL step in the right direction. People need to accept the fact that we are really looking at 2013 before this is a team with enough experience, understanding of the system, and strength and conditioning under their belt to make a serious run through the SEC gauntlet and compete.

Last year you could see where our lack of depth was just killing us late in games. The depth is starting to get better, but mental strength and size are still not there.

The O line has zero gap control and get's pushed back on every play - almost as if they are pass blocking.

they run block like they pass block

Bingo ding ding ding ding

I don't like it and never have. That and our RB is average. With zone blocking we need a great back with vision and we don't have that.

I'm just saying it's his job to teach them technique, something that seems to be lacking. Not suggesting he should be fired or anything like that, but it's fairly obvious that something needs to improve.
