Rumor from a Bucs board

Well...it would be harder to believe if his name had not surfaced so much in 2005. Some of my most respected acquaintances seem to think he will get an offer. 5 mill seems pretty steep, but as Alabama has shown if you want to win you have to open the coffers.

He's probably making $5M by the 3rd year of his extension anyway, so I'm guessing we don't have sufficient $$$ to get him here.

I don't know who the Vols will get to replace Fulmer. But I do know that it has to be someone who can strike fear in the hearts of Gators, Elephants, and Dawgs....Jon Gruden definitely fits the mold.

A superbowl winning coach with tons of nfl connections. Sounds like instant recruiting guru status to me. Give the man his money and sign him up.

I agree that it will be a tough sell. However it could be that we won't get any news until he gives an answer.

I'm not that optimistic about it.

You mean you haven't heard?

Jon Gruden will be our newest coach, with Monte Kiffin as our DC, and Lane Kiffin as our OC.

Oh, and Butch Davis will be our full-time recruiting coordinator and ST coach.

Thanks for playing. The grown ups are talking right now.

ease up on the optimism.

I've heard the discussions center around our possibly making his wife the cheerleading coach and the two would come as a team.

I think Gruden would be a perfect hire, but seriously, we might as well go after Jimmy Johnson and try to convince him to come out of retirement.

When he gets an offer I expect an apology!

BTW I would take her over half of our coaching staff right now.

Wow! thunder must of really stepped up his contribution this year. We could hire singletary as our sideline butt chewer. He'll tell you to hit the showers early if you suck.

I don't think there is any way that happens unless Tampa Bay falls apart and misses out on the playoffs.

I'd be glad to have the guy though.

I think the differences in earnings between UT and Tampa are negligible if the Vols pony up $5 mil.

And there are things about the college game that are attractive to NFL guys. College coaches are earning bigger money nowadays, so that's not the issue it once was. Another distinction between a college coach and an NFL coach is the ability to have final say over your personnel...I don't know if Gruden has total control over his roster in Tampa, but I imagine he doesn't. He would at UT.

All that said, I still think it's far-fetched to think that he'll be the next head coach at UT...but I'd be delighted if he is.

All that office time is putting the pounds on Gruden. He needs to pull a Pete Carroll and get out of the NFL pressure cooker.

plus, the lifestyle differences for the two different levels. College coaches have somewhat of a life outside the game. NFL guys don't, especially during their long-ass season.
