Rucker: Bailey commitment a coup for Vols' Jeremy Pruitt
Great read on why Pruitt does so well on the recruiting trail. A good snipit:
Let’s rewind this just a bit and set the scene for Bailey’s announcement.
It’s been a rough week for Jim Harbaugh’s Michigan Wolverines, who entered last weekend ranked No. 4 nationally and in prime position for a College Football Playoff berth but left the weekend with a humiliating, 62-39 loss to rival Ohio State and eliminated from CFP contention. Regardless, Michigan has recruited at en elite level throughout the Harbaugh era, and Michigan’s current starting quarterback will be a senior next season, so the allure of committing to the Wolverines is completely understandable on any reasonable level.
Perhaps that’s why so many seemed so certain — at least until the past two days — that Bailey would choose Michigan.
Tennessee, on the other hand, isn’t going to a bowl game this season, has a sophomore starter at quarterback, a solid freshman waiting in the wings after a redshirt season and another solid prospect seemingly on the way, assuming that 2019 prospect (Brian Maurer) honors his commitment and signs with the Vols.
And there’s also this: Tennessee currently doesn’t have an offensive coordinator or quarterbacks coach. The man who held both of those roles for the Vols — Tyson Helton — signed a deal earlier this week to become the new head coach at Western Kentucky.
If Pruitt can land an elite quarterback prospect in that situation, what can’t that dude do on the recruiting trail?
