The opt-in’s / free year of eligibility has some implications for the Vols. We are basically at the 85 man limit (for a change). And next year, we are bringing in a full 25, yet won’t lose anywhere close to that number to graduation or early entries.

So we should have some options on letting kids transfer out, or handing out git shirts to the incoming class. We should be able to balance out the roster once and for all.

There's no way the NCAA can implement the same rules on roster size when they excuse a whole year of eligibility for all returning players. That's just my guess.

They will have to increase the roster 85 total for at least one year. Maybe not a full 25 but close to it IMO.

Edit: They will have to increase more than 1 year as others have pointed out after my original post. Some have even suggested it would need to be increased thru 2024.

I’m curious if people on VN think the increased roster will be an advantage for the likes of Alabama, Clemson and other elites or will it benefit lower ranked programs?
Whoever has recruited the best the last 3 recruiting classes will have the advantage as those guys are mostly all going to be listed as Fr or RS Freshman next season. Anybody who struggled in recruiting the last 3 are going to be a year behind as they'll be relying on 18 and 19 year olds as other top teams will be loaded with veteran and quality 19 & 20 year olds. We were lucky to get Pruitt when we did as he's flipped this roster in those last 3 recruiting cycles.

It'll be for more than 1 season as there will be 3 groups of recruits that will be classified as Freshman next year. It'll take at least 3 years for them to all clear out.
Going to be increased parity and weirdness imo. Future team projections are now full of variance, depending on how they navigate the next few years. Teams are going to be extra old, which will help lower teams vs bamas and ugas that just recruit young 5*s.

What about the extra year of eligibility for the 3 other classes. Seems like to me rhe NCAA are going to have to increase the limit for one year if not more.
If they don’t do that that’ll be a real shame. I don’t even want to think about how many kids that won’t get to go to college that otherwise would have.

Returning seniors don't count against the 85 so that will set the limit for each school.
So it’s 85 + some number of returning seniors? Will this number be adjusted in 2022 since Gibbs is now taking his 2nd redshirt year? I guess I’ll believe he’s back for a 6th year when it happens.

The portal will be on fire soon as the season over for a lot of schools. The free year has given a lot of kids options now that smaller programs will take advantage of.

IIRC, none of the upper classmen are guaranteed to have their scholarship renewed. I believe they are one year deals.

Not what you want to do... but it seems we are set up to see a lot of it across CFB.

They have not crossed that bridge yet, but I agree they will need to do something eventually.

Correct.

Not sure what your question about Gibbs or adjusting the number is. This year simply doesn't exist for anyone as far as eligibility clocks go. Whatever he would have been this year (rs jr?) he will still be next year.

Honestly, they're probably going to have to do it for multiple years. It's going to screw the 85 rule up all the way till around 2024.
My idea would be to boost it for 2022, then gradually decrease it over time for a smooth transition back to 85 so coaches can manage their roster with foresight and doing right by the kids. The main thing imo is to avoid sharp cliffs...that would screw a lot over.
