It sounds good on paper. For those who don't know, the Rooney Rule requires all NFL teams to interview a minority candidate when they have a head coaching vacancy.
However, in reality, I think in a lot of cases it is kind of a slap in the face at black coaches. Washington interviewed a black assistant to Jim Zorn while the season was still in progress and before they had even fired Zorn in an attempt to comply so that they could introduce Mike Shanahan as quickly as possible. Now Seattle is rushing to get someone to Minnesota to interview a black candidate (the Vikings Leslie Frazier) so that they can quickly introduce Pete Carroll.
IMO, it is just as bad to waste a mans time just because you have to meet a compliance requirement when it is apparent that the black interviewee is not a serious candidate.
Many black coaches have proven that they are more than capable of being successful when given a chance (Dungy, Tomlin, Edwards), but the process of requiring teams to interview someone when they have already made their decision kind of makes a mockery out of the system.
(move to NFL thread if necessary, but I wrote in consideration of what is going on in the Pete Carroll situation with Seattle and he is technically still an NCAA coach, right??)
