Seeing how we still have this vacancy on our staff and they have played their bowl game, what are your thoughts on this guy?

Linebackers Coach PSU

Ron Vanderlinden is in his eighth year as linebackers coach and has been instrumental in helping restore the "Linebacker U." tradition. Vanderlinden has developed linebacker units that are annually among the nation's best. In 2007, All-American Dan Connor became the school's career tackle leader, won the Bednarik Award and was a finalist for the Butkus Award. Sean Lee, a senior in 2008, earned All-Big Ten honors and was the Alamo Bowl Defensive MVP last year. Vanderlinden also worked with Paul Posluszny, the 2005 Butkus Award recipient and two-time Bednarik Award winner. Vanderlinden, who is very active in Penn State's recruiting efforts, was head coach at the University of Maryland from 1997-2000. A native of Livonia, Mich., he was defensive coordinator at Northwestern from 1992-96 and spent nine years as a defensive assistant at Colorado. He was an important element in the Wildcats' emergence, which produced Big Ten Championship seasons in 1995-96. His defensive pupils at Northwestern included linebacker Pat Fitzgerald, the only other two-time Bednarik Award winner. At Colorado, Vanderlinden coached several NFL draft choices and helped the Buffaloes win the 1990 national championship. He started his career as a graduate assistant at Bowling Green in 1978 and also coached at Michigan and Ball State. A four-year starter at center at Albion College, he twice earned all-conference honors.

His linebackers wouldn't fly in the SEC. All you have to do is look at the beat down USC put on them. To Slow. A different brand of football down here than in the big 10.

And I suppose you were one of the people saying that Urban Meyer's spread wouldn't work in the SEC.

I agree as far as the brand of football, but disagree because those guys are some of the hardest hitting LBs that play the game.

Didn't Lavar Arrington start that??

The legacy began about 100 years ago. It was 1906. Tom Fennell was coach. Penn State had just chosen the Nittany Lion as the mascot. Penn State competed on Beaver Field.

And Mother Dunn, an ironman who played center and linebacker, was one of the most feared players ever to put on a Penn State uniform. Not that the sweaters, jockey pants and swimming-cap like hats that served as helmets resemble the Blue and White worn by the 2008 Penn State football team today

I don't see how you think Rob Vanderlinden started "linebacker U". I don't even think he coached Arrington. Truth is UT has had better Linebackers than Penn St. during Vanderlinden time there. Also he isn't thought of as that great of a recruiter. He isn't coming here.

recently penn states linebackers have been great in college but havent been as good as the UT linebackers in the NFL.

Dude you have a serious comprehension problem. I never stated nothing of the sort. I stated that Penn St. is known as linebacker U. I never said he was coming here either I asked people for their opinions on him.

Not to question you...but wasn't 1906 JoePa's second year as HC?

i've been to alot of penn state games and their linebackers are studs. lee comes back next year and they got some stud freshmen coming in.maybe they dont have the speed that our linebackers have. but in a hitting contest i bet they can hold their own.
