ESPN is featuring schools in the SEC on the main page right now. The Tennessee story is an interesting read about one of the most famous aspects of Neyland Stadium.

ESPN - Higgins: Painting a gridiron Picasso - College Football

It costs $800 worth of paint per home game -- 20 gallons at $40 per gallon -- to paint the checkerboards.

never would've thought it was that expensive

You'd think with the quantity we buy through a season, we could get some sort of bulk deal.

Interesting article. Weirdly, I'm drawing a complete blank as to what was in the end zones in the 70s and 80s when I was growing up, before they brought the checkerboards back. Anybody remember or have a picture?

At one point it just said "TENNESSEE" in the endzone... I'm not sure when but I have an old picture with it like that...

It said "tennessee" for a while and at times didnt have anything. But for the most part it said Tennessee on one end and Volunteers on the other. Like someone else said had the interlocked UT in the middle. Which now I like the power T better. The UT looks like Texas which is why the sued us to be able to use the iinterlocked UT west of the mississippi.

1980 - hard to see but the endzones were plain. They stayed that way through '85 or '86.

Here's a pic from '88 of TD Woods on the endzone helmet.

Wish I did. Went to the game... got a piece of the turf for Christmas but not endzone turf.

Same here, I got it for Christmas from my dad.

Trade? For a Peyton auto'd baseball?:)

Nope..I've got 3 signed footballs. One has only Peyton, one has Peyton and Archie and the other has P + several members of the 96 or 97 team can't remember.

I got all of those by meeting the players outside the locker room after home games.

$40 a gallon..that's nothing. Checkout what Oregon pay per gallon for their green helmet paint.

The paint on the green helmets is made with glass and costs $2,400 per gallon.
