Ayers Off To Fast Start In Denver

We recently wrote about how defensive end-outside linebacker Jarvis Moss, a former first-round draft pick, is still struggling to crack the Denver Broncos' lineup.

Well, it's reportedly the opposite experience for Broncos rookie first-round draft pick Robert Ayers.

The former University of Tennessee all-conference pass rusher could wind up starting immediately at outside linebacker or defensive end.

Ayers has taken the majority of his snaps with the first-string defense at linebacker, according to Pro Football Weekly.

The Broncos have been experimenting with Ayers at both positions in their 3-4 alignment.

With Moss' minimal production, the Broncos sorely need someone to generate a pass rush.

And Ayers' athleticism could provide a boost.

The 6'3," 272-pounder has 4.75 speed in the 40-yard dash. He registered 15 1/2 tackles for losses and three sacks last season.

I didn't know that 4.75 was fast enough to get the job done. I though to be ready for the NFL you needed to be sub 4.7. Anywhoo...Congrats to Robert!

I guess once you get on the field, production matters more than your 40 time.

I agree. Nobody is running their 40 time when the pads are on and in a game. Insert the tired "speed versus quickness" speech.

Robert Ayers, just another example of a great talent that was almost wasted by the previous staff. I would think that a guy who has turned out to be as good as him would have been able to make more of an impact over his career. Sounds like he's going to have a good run in the NFL.

U kidding? For a man that size that's exceptional. He's built like a bowling ball so yeah. Jeez did u notice how many corners broke 4.5 this year? Not that many.

how was his talent wasted? Suspensions, injuries and depth chart played a role too

4.7 is great for a DE. It's not like 40 times should be the measuring stick for DE's anyway.

Wasn't he the only Vol drafted this year? He should definitely be productive for the Broncos this year.

If Shanahan was still the coach I would say Denver holds both offensive and defensive rookie of the year. I still think Ayers get the defensive ROTY, but I'm unsure of the offensive side.

Three sacks in his best season? He obviously had more than three sack potential. If Chavis had blitzed a LB every now and then it would have freed him up to make more plays. There was no excuse for not blitzing more, especially since the secondary was so good last year. Just go back and watch that crap in the UCLA game. A guy like Ayers could have had three sacks in that game alone if used correctly. I think those days are over though.

Shanahan would have never invested a first rounder in a RB. He would have wasted it on an awful Florida player.

That would be sweet. Two straight Defensive ROYs from UT.

That would be nice, and you know that he'll accumulate stats since the Denver D will be on the field a lot. Too bad teams won't be passing too much after getting ahead by two touchdowns early.

Don't underestimate Denver like the media has been. If being a Vols' fan should teach you anything right now, it's that media has a crowd mentality in their thinking, and it is usually biased. Denver actually has some pieces in play and Shanahan was the NFL version of Fulmer, at least in his inability to change his stale ways.

I guess I remember the days of Jevon Kearse when he ran a 4.4. He was the Freak after all.

People don't give Chavis the credit he deserved. He was a darn good coach. LSU is lucky to have him. Monte is one of the few I would take over the Chief.

Yeah, if you like going into a prevent defense when you're up by 3 in the first half.
