Okay, someone explain to me how Alabama is so far ahead of us with their total points when we have 1 less 5-star, but 2 more 4-stars and seven more 3-stars and a 2-star. They must be using fuzzy math, huh?

It's not just the stars; it's how highly they are ranked in the top 250.....extra points for that.

I believe they only count the top 20 recruits for each team in their calculations.

They advertise on their main site how they calculate their rankings. They changed their formula, last year I believe, and it is relatively simple. We have more commits than they do, but that is misleading.

They get "Playmaker" points. We've got some too just not as much. There are 250 HS players that make the "Playmaker" list. BTW, I just made up that name for their list. They actually call it the Rivals 250 or the Top 250 recruits in the nation. The closer to #1 on that list a recruit is the more "Playmaker" points he gets. Think of it as bonus points or ranking points. So while we have 10 commits in that list of 250, Alabama has 15. We have 4 JUCO commits that are effectively as good or better than some of the HS kids in that 250 list but JUCO kids don't get to be in the list. So Alabama is getting extra points for taking more kids that are actually in that list but it's deceptive in that our class is really a lot closer to theirs right now than the points reflect. Hope that helps.

Here's their bonus scale

More to add:

As someone else noted the total points are calculated on ONLY the top 20 commits. So Alabama has 2994 points but they have 24 commits. Four of those commits add nothing to their total points. So 2994/20 = 149.70 Avg points per each of their Top 20. We have 2602 points and 33 commits. So 13 of our commits add nothing to our score. 2602/20 = 130.10 avg points per each of our Top 20. As I noted earlier we have 4 highly rated JUCO's but the JUCOs don't get any Rivals 250 bonus points so that is largely the difference and it's a bit artificial and penalizing in that we are gaining experience along with talent.

It's because Alabama is building that new winery. They had to do something with a the sour grapes

All of the top 250 overall players receive extra points, and the higher you are ranked the more extra points you receive. You also need to compare the number of 6.1, 6.0, 5.9, etc. players we have. The stars assigned to each player doesn't provide the precision you need for comparison. Note that all 3 of Bama's 5 star players are ranked higher than either Hurd or Malone. Also note that JUCO players do not receive any of these 'extra points' and we have at 5 (I think) and Bama only has 1. We also have one player that hasn't received any stars yet.

This year Rivals only uses the top 20 players in each recruiting class.

With that said, if we used last year's Rivals ranking system that included all players (not just the top 20) in the calculation, we would be #1 with a total point value of 3532. Alabama would be #2 with a total point value of 3279.

Because like every other media outlet they are all over Bamas junk. Obviously if a kid picks UT over Bama then that kid can't be better than the kid that picked Bama over other schools because Bama is a national title team. So if a highly ranked 5* were to decommit from Bama then they will probably drop to a low 4-3* and when a 2-3* signs to Bama he then jumps up to high 4-5* status.

As previously noted, JUCO players do not receive bonus points regardless of their ranking. However, according to this source (ESPN Football Recruiting - Player Rankings - ESPN), five of the Top Fifty JUCO prospects nationally are committed to Tennessee: (2) Lavon Pearson, (6) Davonte Lambert, (26) Dontavius Blair, (29) Chris Weatherd, and (40) Owen Williams. By their ranking, Tennessee has more commitments among the Top 50 JUCO prospects in the country than any other program. And the Big Orange haul of JUCO blue chips could go still higher. Uncommited prospects for whom Tennessee remains a serious contender include: (23) Eric Lauderdale and (41) Calvin Heurteleu. Unlike the top 250 Rivals.com high school prospects, there will be no bonus points associated with their rankings, despite the fact that everyone of them fills a position of need superbly for us.
