We get the honorable mention. This means the most we can aim for is SEC Champion this year. So the goal is now set. Let's hope we're bound for Atlanta in December and maybe January unless New Orleans gets back in shape.

Would rather start with an honorable mention and end up #3 then vise versa like last year. And... Preseason polls are for the media and don't meam sh*t until the games are played.

i believe what he means, is if there are 2 unbeatens, we would get left out.

If we got undefeated and with our SOS we should be alright. Let's beat Cal first. GO VOLS!!!!!! :twocents:

There are a couple of other ones out that also do not have us in their top 25. Basically no one that far away from the top 10 heading into pre-season has a chance to move up and over anyone in the top few by season end. See Auburn a few years ago for example. The NC is out for us at this rate. The highest we can aim for is SEC title and Sugar or another BCS bowl, which in itself is not bad considering we were 5-6.

I would be ecstatic with a nine win season and a decent bowl. I would be jumping for joy if we won a SEC Championship and I would streak down my streat naked, ala the National Championship season of 98, if we got to the Sugar Bowl and won it.

Auburn is a poor example because they played Louisiana-Monroe, The Citadel (I-AA), and Louisiana Tech as their non-conference opponents. It also did not help that they were beaten the previous season by one of the other unbeatens. USC beat them in 2003 by a score of 23-0.

Tennessee's non-conference schedule of Cal, Air Force, Marshall, and Memphis is much better than Auburn's 2004 non-conf schedule.

The other factor to examine is that in the history of college football, 3 unbeatens from major conferences is a rarity. If the Vols do in fact finish undefeated, they will with a high probability be in the national championship game.

Actually it's a good example. if you aren't high up the list early and those above you have better schedules and records, you're left out. Remember that two of the three factors were polls. Had Auburn been 1 or 2 in the regular polls earlier, then THEY would have gone to the NC game. When you are that far back, you can't hop over all of those teams and expect to go for a NC.

Again, in your example, you say there is a high probability that an undefeated UT would go to the title game. Did Auburn? Nope.

Is there anything more irrelevant than a late January college football poll?
I'll have to agree with GAVol on this one. There are too many variables at this point to predict how a team will do next year.

It's not saying how a team will do next year. Clearly number 3 to toilet like we did last year is the best example. But you can't go from not even in the top 25 to National Title contender in one year. Obviously polls matter a little more than people care to want. When was the last time a non-rated or even bottom 20-25 team made it to the NT game? if we're that low or unranked pre-season, then there is little to absolutely NO shot at a title.

Oklahoma started 2000 at #19 and won the National Championship.

19 is just inside.....I said 20-25.... :devilsmoke:
A simple equation: Play in the SEC+Win all your games+Don't play The Citadel=National Championship Game Spot.

Can't argue with that formula. I don't know about all of this National Chamionship chatter. Right now, I would consider a BCS bowl a major accomplishment.
