Risky hires of the past...

Bruce Pearl - Hired by Auburn. No one ever mentions his past. Whenever TN plays Auburn in games I never once hear how shady he is.
Lane Kiffin - Shady as they come. Alabama hires him and it is as if nothing happened. (To be fair he didn't really get caught doing anything too bad)
Bobby Petrino - Hired by Louisville. Once he started winning you never heard a thing about his past. People were praising his Louisville teams.

I was around when we thought Cam Newton could come to TN. Many of our fans were scared because of him stealing laptops from Florida. Auburn jumps on him and they win a National Championship. No one ever brings up his past. They just talk about how amazing he is. Goes on to the NFL.

What other trends have you seen? These are the ones on the top of my head. I know there are tons more.

If we hire Freeze I suspect rival teams will attempt to bash us, but they know deep down inside that we are on an upward trend. They would take him if they could. I'm willing to take the week of bashing for a hopeful rebound of my beloved Vols.

There was plenty of coverage on all three of their past when they were hired.

Unless you're listening to the Vol network you'll hear about Bruce's time at UT and what happened. Same with Lane. Not sure which one you're taking about for #3

Urban Meyer has a shady past signing thugs, kids who shoot others, the Florida program was out of control when he left but you never hear anything about that. Same for NCarolina. Barely heard of the investigation over academic fraud (supported by numerous former players).

Every school in the SEC would hire Hugh Freeze as OC....every single one.

I certainly go way back further than those and believe me there were plenty of scandalous coach's out there that bounced around and occasionally one would get caught and never allowed to coach again. Maybe I misremember but in the early to mid 70's most of what we heard about were "rumors" and the NCAA didn't seem very interested in pursuing most of it. Of course if it got to the SMU status then they would have no choice. I remember the Memphis State deal with Dana Kirk of course. And the Miami Hurricanes football. Oklahoma with Switzer. Those types but mostly it was kept quiet. Now days news travels to fast to everyone and BOOM!!!! There were even rumors of Ray Mears and the NY connection but nothing really much came of it.

With these "risky" hires or decisions, people tend to underestimate the short-term reaction and overestimate the long-term reaction.

Usually, the social media mob is fast and furious initially, and there is a tendency to think the criticism will last a long time. In most cases it goes away after a few days and nobody cares. If Tennessee hires Freeze, there will immediately be think pieces talking about how hypocritical Tennessee's fans and admin are (because we ran off Schiano but want Freeze). In fact, I bet some will be written already. It'll go away in 2 days and nobody will care after that.

Bruce Pearl is/was every bit as shady as Kiffin. Pearl is just really charming and uses that to his advantage. He’s a very low character individual.

And yet the media doesn’t bash him anymore. Just like they won’t with Hugh Freeze.

Every hire is a risk one way or another. Hell, Saban might be a closet tranny and have a collection of blow up dolls nobody knows about.....yet. But I'd hire him yesterday!
