Like it or not.......Rick has decided to stay on as a grad assist. Jay Graham who will move on, and IMO, to MTSU along with an angry JRS.
I know this will set fires here and there, But i for one am happy he will do his grad work at UT.

This is Huge as far as recruiting next year goes. This will be a major draw for Jimmy Clausen to play where both his brothers played and one of his brothers is a grad assist. We all know he wouldn't go to Miss State with Causey for any reason. I think Rick will be a great coach some day, where better to start then at UT, and some recruiting leverage to land Jimmy next year.

Every thing I read about Jimmy Clausen is great. At the Army all American game they said that he was the best all around player in high school now and for as far as they could remember back. They said he was a better player than anyone on the field that day and he is only a junior this year.

Watchout. Next year before national signing date Dady Jim will "suggest'"Rick be promoted to Offensive Coordinator to insure Jimmy coming to Knoxville!!

It's a graduate assistants position folks. Lives aren't going to be altered. Offensive philosophy is not going to be changed by him. He's not going to taint anybody's favorite recruit.
A kid who wants to be a coach someday gets to hang around the coaching staff for another couple of years and soak it all in.
How could this possibly be a bad thing?

Not sure about this one IBO, I understand Jay had an excellent interview with Coach Rodney Allison at UTC. I think there is a good chance he may take the open Running Backs Coach position with the Mocs.

Isn't a grad assistant kind of like a coaching intern? Rick better hide CPF's cigar stash or it could be a long year.

Grad Assistant, correct. Maybe people don't know what that is.Just as Tasha Butts did for the Lady Vols. I like the fact we can help him.

Anybody who is upset about this is letting anger blind their 'common sense' mode of thinking. The kid got by with very little physical tools because he was a very smart player who understood the game better than any player on our offense. So, what about that doesn't translate into a good coach?

And I'll third it...

The kid was undersized without a great arm, and through toughness and intelligence came in and bailed our tails out of the fire for the entire 2004 season. I think he'll make a good coach, and I'm happy to have "new" orange blood on the sidelines.

He was not the best quarterback ever to run through the T, but from all I've seen he is a bright guy who knows and loves football, and to top that off he is a quality person. Whether we get lil brother or not, I'm glad to have him on the staff.

:D I glad he is getting to stay if that is what he wants. I did not like him as a quaterback but I would never hate a young man that is doing the best he can.

In all of the Rick-bashing I did I will say the kid had the KNOWLEDGE of the game but not the SKILLS to be the great player. Perhaps it was strength or whatever. Regardless I think as a GA he can be of great use. He's a good motivator. He's what Mike Bobo is to UGA.....not the best of QBs but knows the game and position enough to help make a difference for his QBs.

He is there is learn. He will have some experience to pass on. His team mates loved him and he was a great motivator of team mates during the game. There are many positives to him sticking around on the sidelines.

Could not stand him as a quarterback and hope he is a great GA and coach some day.

Who knows he could be the QB coach when Cut takes over the top spot!

hehehehehe

Perhaps his calling is to coach and not so much as a player. He gave it it his all as a player but his personality will make him more respected and a decent coach one day.

AMEN . . . Just goes to show that people will second guess anything. When we start criticizing the hiring of a Grad Assistant, it has officially gotten ridiculous.

correct. He has no bearing on the system or has any input on play calling or offensive philosophy. He is simply getting their feet wet for those who plan to coach full time in the future. Like it or not, Rick is part of the UT family more so than the armchair qb's.

It would not surprise me that that is what CPF is thinking. Maybe a way to get the inside track on Jimmy.
