He has his flaws just like any other coach but you’re telling me a HOF Coach with over 700 wins, magically forgot how to coach overnight?

You can complain and whine about Barnes after this loss but it’s not as bad as you’re making it out to be. If Keon could have made some of his layups and free throws, we likely pull out the W.

The shots didn’t fall for us in the 2nd half. It happens to some of the better teams. That’s part of the game.

The point is, if you think the basketball program is bad now, it could be a whole lot worse.

Barnes has made this team respectable. Whenever he retires, you better hope Danny White hires a good coach to replace him because it sure as hell won’t be easy

The drive by posters think that coaches are supposed to be demonstrative, jump around like rabid monkeys, and scream until their faces turn purple. Calmly instructing players what to do is considered coaching malpractice.

Barnes is NOT a bad coach. He's average. We will never see our bball team accomplish anything worthy of remembering as long as he's coach. It's that simple. The guy has been to ONE final four in his career! And it took Durant to get him there. This team has THREE 5 stars and looks like ****. How much more talent does the guy need for God's sake?

I get the concerns with making Barnes a top-five (perhaps three, it can be hard to definitively pin down) paid coach at a football school when you're not only not seeing any Final Fours but also watching your football team end up spending $4mm/year instead of the huge bucks, but you're exactly right that Barnes has done nothing but keep this program at a respectable level once he dug out of the Tyndall hole in 2017. If Barnes coaches for ten more seasons here (hah), I would bet anything that UT doesn't come close to three Final Four appearances and I agree that's not really great for what he's getting paid but, overall, Tennessee isn't the type of program that can look at our ridiculously-solid team this season and think "Barnes has to go."

This might fuel your argument more, but Durant's squad was out in the Round of 32.

Absolutely spot on.

Great post.

Maybe those 5 stars need to not have more turnovers than baskets made. You really think Barnes is coaching that? At some point, the players have to execute.

I agree with you except Keon is not the player I'd single out for the loss tonight. In my opinion (and this is without looking at the box score so this might be dumb), he was our second most valuable player tonight behind Pons

As Springer goes, so go the Vols.

The coaches job is to teach them how to break a 1/2 court trap. We look like we had never even practiced against this. That’s all coaching!

This. Barnes has never really done anything in his career to be considered “ elite”. I mean over 700 wins with only one final four tells you everything you need to know about how good of a coach he really is

The game has passed him... Offensively at least... Half court trap and we just play into it..... Every Single Time.... We play way to slow looking for the "good shot"

I think he is a very good coach, basketball is about runs and you have to stop them slow them down and i watched him hang on to the time out in the first half and lost a 10 or 12 point lead and he did it again 2nd half as well. Very poor management on his part tonight. Also you do have to make a basket every once & awhile as well. JMO

I do think its fair to say he should've used one on the next to final possession that ended up with Keon shooting free throws
Honestly, why? They got as deep to the basket as possible and ended up at the line with a chance to tie it. Sounds like he had it drawn up perfectly but had zero execution.

For me even if Keon is right under the basket, I have shots id prefer than him trying to force it up over three dudes. Not he did have Scovi wide open for three off the offensive rebound and he should have kicked it, but I guess he didn't see him
