I’ll keep this short and sweet:
1) The breaks just DID NOT go our way
This is in no way meant to excuse losing to them, but this had a 2016 “App State game” feel to it.
-Their first TD we gave them a tiny field
-Twice we stopped them on third and medium/long, once Nigel was given a terrible PI call, once we were too dumb to call the timeout when we had too many men on the field. They scored on both drives
-The play where their QB rushed for a 20’ish yard TD could have been stopped, but two of our DB’s collided with each other.
-Dom beat his defender when JG threw the long completion to him, it was a walk-in from there, except Dom tripped over his own feet and fell out of bounds.
Basically whatever could have gone wrong this game, very much did. Had the breaks not gone their way ALL DAY LONG, we probably win this game somewhere in the ballpark of 30-7 or 24-13.
2) The line play/QB difference:
The line play (both sides) wasn’t as miserable as everyone wants to make it out to be. We didn’t play great on either line, but it wasn’t disastrous. The truth is, their QB was better than our QB. Their QB was quick, confident, and decisive. JG was a safe-route throwing machine. I won’t bore you all by naming specific plays, but if you go watch again you’ll see how many times he missed a wide open receiver and checked down instead. In fact, don’t watch, it will irritate you.
3. Warren Burrell got picked on:
Sorry CJP, not impressed with your golden boy. We badly missed Bryce out there today. WB was getting beat like he stole something.
4. Jennings was open all day on the crossing route:
JG didn’t see him because he was too busy looking for his safety valve.
It was a bad game, everyone. Stay positive. Aside from #1, all of these things can be corrected/improved on. The popular thing right now is to say “this was no fluke”, it was a fluke. The breaks went their way, quite one-sidedly actually. Combine that with some poor play and poor decision making, and you’re losing to any team at any level.
