Sometimes all a coach needs is time. Now it is very possible that none of these would have worked out well but there have been ties when coaches of other teams were retained after bad seasons and ended up doing very well. Even if you don't think that would be the case, under which scenario would Tennessee football be in the best position today?

Times* (not ties)

Lane Train, Fulmer was done momentum wise, Kiffin had tons of energy to rebuild Knoxville but took all the momentum away. It's an easy, obvious choice that most of the instability didn't come from Fulmer leaving, but moreso Kiffin leaving. He was the "spark" after losing to Wyoming, he was the one to bring us back. What he did kind of set up, along with awful hires, where we are. If he stayed 5 years, even if he sucked, we would be in a decent position today

You forgot “None of the Above” as a choice. Fulmer stayed 4 years too long. Dooley was given one year too many. Another year for Butch and there would have been no program left to hire a coach to lead. Kiffin for a 2nd year equaled major sanctions. Besides he left anyway. How about this choice, “Fulmer retires after 2004 Cotton Bowl game” handing the reigns to a proven winner HC of a power 5 school ready to take a bigger challenge at what was then a Top 10 program in Tennessee?

Kiffin or Phil would be best two with Phil being best move.

I think had Dooley been able to keep Wilcox by throwing money at him, the 2012 team could have been really special.
I agree. Hopefully chaney can get that level offense again in the near future no matter who the head coach is

That would have been awesome

There is only one correct answer.

Tennessee should have hired Patterson instead of Kiffin.

Tennessee would at least be Bama JR right now.
I agree. With Texas A&M hiring away Jimbo Fisher recently, I think tennessee should have gone after some bigger names, particularly in the dooley, jones and kiffin searches. Now are no longer able to lure in a big time head coach

I said Fulmer as Kiffin would have probably taken another job, and we might have hired Patterson.

I agree but there is a good chance we would have had major sanctions so that couldn't have worked out well

They had the choice Kiffin who had done nothing or Patterson who at the time had only had 3, 11 win seasons out of his previous 4.

For some odd reason they chose Kiffin. They listened to a talker, instead of hiring a doer.

Joey Saltwater left us in JANUARY which led to us hiring Dedick Drooley which led us to Botch Jones. I think it's obvious the only solution to this problem is give the great pumpkin one more year. Honestly though if you put Ed Ogre as an option, I might've picked that.

I honestly think had we given Cut the staff requests he wanted instead of forcing Kiffin’s leftovers on the next coach to avoid buyouts, we would have been fine.

Does Cut likely bring back some guys like Adkins and Chavis? Sure, but no one would have hesitated at that after Kiffin initial reaction.

Went Fulmer for the case that we don't start this downfall. I'm not saying we don't fall but maybe it wouldn't be worse? Butch is a def No and the real breaker for Dooley was the Sunseri hire. Maybe if he gets Steele he gets more time but with the results we had it was definitely time. Kiffin staying may be coming back to bite us right about now.

Hiring O in 2010? Was he at ole miss at the time?

Another note is Fulmer only had two losing seasons in 16 years. And after his first one, he made a 4 win improvement the following year. Recruiting for 2009 was high for him still and he would have made changes with or without a Lawson to not repeat the 2008 5-7 record in 2009

Even in his down seasons where we were bowl eligible, he still improved the following seasons in the W/L column.
