Remember what they said about Cam Newton?

I'm glad you brought that game up, because it allows me to post this:

Oh how he was holding onto that ball. He had to have tape on his hands.

that was an awesome game. and, interestingly, i was in Knoxville for work during that game...i think i woke people up in the rooms next to me at the hotel screaming at the TV.....:eek:lol:

That's actually the one Panthers game I went to. Hell of an experience

that was a good one to go to.......

the best one i've been to was the 03 wild card game against Dallas.....

hard to say this as a TN alum whose been to plenty of big games in Neyland, but that was hands down the most fun i've had attending a football game...

maybe, i can see that.

it certainly played out that way til the end....iirc, all the hosts of Inside the NFL picked AZ to win the NFC title game.

that worked out. i think at this point, even with 17 wins, we just don't look like the typical successful team.

we don't look like the 90's cowboys or 80's 49ers...schematically on offense, it's way different, the attitude, and fun loving nature of the team, the antics on the sidelines, how the QB behaves...all rolls up in to something people "aren't used to, so it can't possibly work...."

hell, i didn't trust it until about week 9 or 10. it took me a while to figure out you could "depend" on this offense.

and for a non panther fan, i can imagine that journey is a lot longer than it is for me.

Thanksgiving against Dallas was when I knew we had something very special this year and that anything but a Super Bowl title would be a significant disappointment. I'm not sure what it was exactly about that game, as Dallas was awful this season, but maybe it was that Thanksgiving Day spotlight, the all-blue unis, the fact it took us to 10-0 (or maybe it was 11-0), or us dancing around in the Cowboys' endzones like we owned Jerry World. Whatever it was, I knew after the way we dominated them on that stage in Dallas that this team was the real deal and that the season to that point in time was no fluke.

it's gonna sound dumb, but for me it was the Titans game.

i figured we'd just come off a tough 4 game stretch that many, self included, would have just been happy splitting. but there we are....8-0.

and the Titans are sitting there, on the road, not very good...perfect trap game...and we dominated that game on the road. to me that kind of validated that that's what good teams do to bad teams, even on the road....for good teams, there is no trap game. they don't get caught with their pants down.

and then we reeled off the wins against NO, WSH, and DAL.....

To be fair, they all knocked Vince Young but after scoring 24 in the 4th quarter down 21-0 to beat the Giants and the 99 yard game winning drive with only 2 minutes to work with against the Cardinals, they all backtracked and said they were wrong about Vince Young. Then Vince Young turned around proved them correct from the beginning. I'm not saying that's what will happen with Newton, but it's really just a prediction on their part. Predicting sports is gambling. You win some, you lose some. I remember the offense they used with Cam and didn't think highly of his future either based on the gimmicky offense used. People wrote off Texas Tech and Hawaii QB's for the same reason essentially. Highly successful but everyone knows it's due to the offense and the QB's who filter in and out produce as well regardless of who the QB is.

Not sure VY is a good comparison.

Difference is that Vince Young's Texas team actually had talent on it. Vince Young never made anyone else better. Cam Newton makes everyone around him better. That Auburn team he won a national title with is probably one of the worst teams to ever win a title. Without him, that team probably doesn't win more than 7 or 8 games. 9 at the very max, and that would have required an above average QB. With Cam Newton at QB, our Vols could have won the national title this year, because our team this past season was more talented collectively than that Auburn team.

this...this is what i thought he COULDN'T do. i didn't see him as a guy that could elevate the group of WR's we had after KB went down. this is, along with several other things, is one of the chief things that has made this team special.
It's not all about race. Just a little bit.
i think we've come a long way since "how long have you been a black quarterback?"

but i do think it's naive to think that race isn't a component for some of the "haterade". i'm an early 40's white guy from the South, and i've heard it in certain circles. i know it exists. it's not overt or harkening back to the 50's and 60's type of attitude, but in today's age...the hip hop culture, the "swag"....yeah, it's there. some comments are subtle, some are not. but you hear it, and you know instantly that those are snap judgements, and that they're not made based on any real knowledge of him or the situation.

all that said, i've also seen some folks in those same circles i just spoke of, come around and admit to me personally..."man i was wrong about him". but it took time, and it took some investment to see what he's doing, understand what he's done, and how he goes about his business...that and how he's improved as a player on the field. once they've done that, to a man, they all have changed their opinion of him.

i think that's the biggest difference, is that this guy, Cam Newton, has the ability to ingratiate himself to a community like this, change perceptions while not really changing his own self..... and not everyone can do that.

he's not TO or Ocho Cinco or Odel Beckham, or Michael Irvin. he's actually a lot closer to Peyton Manning, character wise (than he'll probably ever get credit for) and i'll be very surprised if that changes thru out his career.

Well that, and Newton is in his 5th season and is hitting his stride. He's lead his team to the Super Bowl and is about to be crowned NFL MVP.

Vince Young in his 5th season was playing his last as a Titan and last as a starter in the NFL. His 5 seasons showed he was likely never going to be a stable starting QB in the NFL and his time could be described as "roller coaster" at best, and after that he'd only make an NFL roster 1 more season.
