Remember back in 2012 when our biggest targets were Charlie Strong and Mike Gundy?

Strong nah, Patterson absolutely though
You’re saying Strong would’ve been just as bad? Baloney. He took Louisville to the Sugar Bowl and thumped Florida, then went 12-1 a year later and deatroyed Miami in the Russell Athletic Bowl. Dooley/Jones/Pruitt could never have done that.

Wasn’t Strong attrocious at Texas? I can’t remember fully. Back in a pretty wake Big 12 too. I’m not saying he’d been as bad as Pruitt or Dooley but his ceiling here would have been probably what Butchs was 9-4 a couple times

Charlie Strong to his defense was never fully embraced at Texas. Half of the booster base fought the hire. Now to their defense, they are Texas and hired a quality coach. Strong would have been a moron to turn down the Texas Job. Anyone would if offered.

But he should have never taken it because he didn’t fit Big 12 ball.

To me, cheaping out on Strong and allowing him to mull it over and going back to Louisville was one of two dumb mistakes that cost Tennessee football greatly in the 2010 decade.

He was one of the very few coaches who had an axe to grind with one of our rivals in Florida. He had some motivation in taking the Tennessee job. When you’re down and you have a candidate who has an ego to beat your opponents, I’ll take that every time. Instead of some “build a program” box coach who uses buzz words.
