In today’s recruiting environment what is the most important thing for a 17 or 18 year old recruit? Obviously winning is important to everyone, but what’s next? Playing time, tradition, uniforms, academics, or something else? I don’t really follow recruiting that closely so I was wondering what you guys thought.

1. Winning
2. Playing time
3. Coaching relationships
4. Uniforms

It's take a culmination of the first 3 to get a player to sign uniforms are a nice kicker, winning gets the foot in the door playing time gets their ear and relationships make them sign.

I would think most of these kids are looking for a gateway into professional football.

This is just my order from what I have went through and other experiences along the way. JMO.

1. You definitely want to be on a winning team. One that has some character and "swagger" to them. Kinda like FSU did last year on the defensive side.

2. A student-athlete's lifestyle could play a large role. Do you want to be living in UCLA's dorms and city or Nebraska's? Just an example.

3. I honestly think gameday atmosphere plays a big part and other traditions... (the Vol Walk and running through the Power T)

4. Relationship with coaches... huge IMO.

5. I think playing time and coaching philosophies could be here. Also, facilties.

6. And last but not least... Academics :)

This is always different with every kid. And there are several things I left off that could be major factors in a kid's decision.

Agree with what everybody else said.

I'll add a couple.

Girls.

Not in that order.

jerry Mcguire said it best "Show me the money!!" A gateway to the NFL. Swag comes with those players. So they can bring swag here. It's all about the NFL.

A conversation with a friend got me to thinking about this question. He was talking about all the different uniforms Oregon has and I was wonderig how much of a roll this played in attracting a kid to a school.

I would think the NFL would be the goal of a lot but with the small percentage of players actually making to the NFL I wonder how many kids actually have this goal in mind when selecting a school.

Geography -

Proximity to parents/family in many situations. Some players want their families to see them on the field/after the game.

Well I think if you're talking about Tennessee or Oregon programs like that, I think the bigger D-1 schools mostly sign atheletes that have intentions of going pro. If you're talking about college period then I might be wrong.

Can my coach do a good enough job of coaching me that my skills improved measureably each year to the point that I am draftable in the N.F.L. in my senior season.

Plays a significant role contrary to what people think. Tradition is becoming secondary.

Not that my career went anywhere but when I was being recruited playing time was most important for me. I had a FBS offer but I could tell I was recruited to be career back up. Instead I went to a FCS school..still remained a backup but thats different !! The important message is immediate playing time. Also facilities and relationship with coaches are very important !!
