Last season, the mods let us have a weekly thread to discuss the game specifically. Let's see if it sticks this year:

Things to watch:

1. QB Battle: A starting QB will be named tomorrow, but it likely will not be settled until at least 3 games into the season. It is rumored that Butch wants to play 3 QB's in this game. Who is going to show why they should be "the man?"

2. RB Battle: With the passing game likely being a bit shaky this year, we need a RB (or two) to step up, and take advantage of possibly the most talented OL in Tennessee history. Expect Neal and Lane to tear off large chunks of yardage against AP. It would not be surprising to see Tennessee rush for over 300 yards, unless Butch forces the QB's to see what they are made of once the game is in hand.

3. TN Defense: Much of the cast of the worst defense in Tennessee history remains intact, though the scheme is now much easier to grasp, and we don't have a troll as a DC. The defense will be much better this season, and they would love nothing more than to open the season with a shutout, but there are holes and our corners are greatly unproven.

4. Butch Jones Era: Everyone here has grown to love the legend of Butch Jones. Now, we see what he and his staff is like on game days. Expect him to be fiery, and having the time of his life during his first day in the saddle of his dream job.

5. Austin Peay: I almost feel sorry for AP as they walk into Neyland. With their home stadium having a capacity of 10,000, expect the team to be wide eyed as they walk into a house of 102,455... especially with 59 players coming from the state of TN, it wouldn't be a stretch to say half of their team probably dreamed of playing for TN as kids/teens. This is an opportunity for them to shine in Neyland, and they will be motivated, but don't expect too much of a fight from a team that went 2-9 last year playing a TN hungry to Rise to the Top sooner, rather than later.

Prediction: TN 45 AP 6

Number 3 is the one I'm anticipating the most. I'm really curious to see what the D will look like fundamentally. We should be much improved

Wouldn't be surprised if they gave each QB a script of the exact same plays and graded them out on their performance.

Fourth QB redshirt candidate?

Ah my bad. I was thinking when they walk into Neyland they will see 100, 000. My mistake

No worries. I've got a headache already, it's probably not the most brilliantly written piece. I usually do about 10 points, but I'm tired. I didn't even begin to discuss WR's, DL, and other important points. Next week, there will be a lot more to discuss.

I don't think you'll be able to take very much from this game.

Hmm I guess I should have clarified more. I was meaning overall for the season. I know the AP game won't mean much. I'm just wanting to see what Jancek and CO. have done to imorove the horrible habits our D had

OP - please don't call our O-line "possibly the most talented in UT history" when they can't even crack the top 6 in the SEC in rushing offense. They are soft until proven otherwise.

Which QB, if you had to choose, would you go with?

I would begin with Worley. He is a great teammate and leads by example. Give him every opportunity to succeed, as long as it doesn't compromise a win. I would give Peterman and Ferguson a fair shake as well, and let Dobbs redshirt. If things begin to shake out like I think they may, Ferguson could be in the saddle around November, but that means we have had a pretty rough year.

I will admit my limited historical perspective here. But to call this line soft...

They were putrid in 2011 and middle of the SEC in 2012 iirc in rushing offense. You can blame Chaney's offense or our backs if you want but anybody with a pair of eyes can see these guys aren't brawlers. Great in pass protection, but soft on the run. Again, hopefully that will change.

Actually, I will blame a pass happy offense and lackluster RB's.

Last year, we passed 54% of the time and ran 46%.

Winning teams score more, and have more opportunities, and some teams are geared more for the run.

Teams that finished above TN in total rushing yards, from the SEC are as follows:

AL 570, 5.6 YPC
A&M 533, 5.9 YPC
UGA 525, 4.9 YPC
UF 539, 4.5 YPC
MISS 551, 4.1 YPC
LSU 527, 4.3 YPC
VANDY 524, 4.1 YPC
TN 413, 4.7 YPC

So, I would say that YPC is a better indicator than overall yards. We measured up 4th there (top 28% of the SEC)... better than Florida and LSU... with our starter injured for several games, and our defense staying on the field for 75% of the game!

Every single lineman gets drafted. Run tell that.

And landed on a folding chair outside the ring. Finishing 8th in the SEC in rushing won't get it done, especially when your offense is more balanced than you think - 54% to 46%? That's pretty balanced.

Yeah because we can all agree that we had a normal running game last year.

Folding chair is comfy right now.

Every team above us had over 100 more rushing attempts than we did.

You think with 100+ extra attempts, just maybe we would have creeped up that list? When we averaged 34 rushes per game, that 100+ attempts is the equivalent of not even rushing for 3 complete games.

You make some good points, but they have a lot to prove before we crown them the best in UT history.

As I said before, I may be limited in historical perspective, but I think they have proven a heck of a lot. Unfortunately, we have below average RB's carrying the load. If you were to take any of TN's greats and put them behind this line, it would be beautiful. I will still say we average around 5 YPC this year, with 500 rushes, bringing in 2,500 yards, nearly 600 yards better than last year. If going by last year's stats, that would be 4th in the SEC, and just 56 yards behind 3rd place UGA.

:hi:

Dang y'all... I just got Fade to concede.

I think the WR's are going to be better than what many think. The coaches are perfectionists and demand that of their players. When you look at the number of guys that saw real snaps last year and the lack of desire from the last coaching staff I would say a lot of these guys were probably in shock. I think once they decompress from camp and start to game plan things will fall into place for many of them. These guys have plenty of talent and I am excited to watch our WR's.
