Recruiting Forum: Official MCB Nebraska Pre-Game/Game Thread

What can I say. Am left with a good feeling closing out a solid season in a sold out bowl game defeating a 9-3 Nebraska team and sending off Dobbs and Barnett, two stars that have elevated the program over the last 3 years and should be remembered among the all-time greats.

Kirkland and Bituli on field together would be nice.

Agree. Have Sapp available for Star with Kelly. It's time to play real LB's again. McDowell improved some late in the season as well. Those 4 would give them a nice rotation.

Bituli is a legitimate 230+ as a true freshman. Not much body fat. With a strong S&C he can go 240 easy and not lose any quickness.

Really excited to see what Gullickson can do with Bituli (among others).

Same here. Think Butch has maybe realized this Navy Seal approach to training works fine in the military, but won't get it done versus elephants and tigers on a football field. All we have to do is look at the results from the two games today. The best two teams for the last two years will stand toe to toe and knock your block off. If you try to run away they will take the right angle and make you pay. It wears the opponents down having to pick themselves up off the ground every play.

And middle linebackers need to have instincts and recognition. We know Kirkland does...jury's out on Bituli.

Totally agree with that. Not saying to give the job to Bituli just because of his size. Just that ideally, he's ready to go at a high enough level we can let Kirkland play a bit more in space since we've seen him struggle at times with taking on blockers and staying healthy.

Ultimately the coaches have to decide what the best combo of LBs is. I'm just hoping that combo involves Bituli.

The physicality he's showing already is what I like. He has zero regard for annihilating a man in his way. We need that out of every LB. If they don't think like that I don't want him on the roster. LBs should be the craziest players on the defense.

Which is what UT used to be noted for and has been lacking for quite awhile now. We need more 230-240 lbs. crazy guys that would just as soon level people as look at them. Not pile checkers and blocking dummies. JRM style with more meat on them. Jerod Mayo, Al Wilson, etc. all the way back to Hacksaw and Kiner. Kirkland and Bituli have it in them. Want to see more.

Now you've done it: evoked Hacksaw and Kiner. Jackie Walker's memory is ready for entree.

Bituli likes contact should be one to watch next year.

I don't know if I expect too much or what, but most of our guys who have been on campus for 2-3 years don't look like they've been in a college S&C program for that long. Not to single anyone out but, Bates for example. He just looks like some regular dude on the street to me.

Agreed so hopefully the new S&C coach can fix that. In regards to Bates though he has been hurt every offseason since he's been here. He might end up being a bust but that'll probably be due to injuries than anything else

All of it looks bad. Offseason and in season.

Bates injuries been upper or lower body?

I think our S&C is lacking but individual accountability is at play too. I see every year at the combine embarrassing numbers put up. Like 320 lb OL benching 225 for less than 20 reps. So ultimately it's on the HC and S&C coach to make sure these guys are putting in the work, but the players have to want to get stronger and not just go through the motions and do the bare minimum.

At a school like Tennessee the S&C is on the HC and S&C coach. Alabama never has these issues because Saban has zero tolerance.

Agreed and I guess that's why they didn't like the precious S&C coach because he was holding them accountable. Butch should have never caved to the players on that one.

This board tore Lawson up last season. Why? Injuries. Also said we "practiced too rough". :cray: This season? Too many injuries and we "practiced too light". Detect a theme? :)
